[www.keralites.net] GREEN TEA FOR WEIGHT LOSS

Green Tea for Weight Loss
If weight loss is one of your top health goals, green teamay help. Some studies show that substances in green tea may offer several weight-loss-promoting effects, such as speeding up your metabolism and suppressing your appetite. Although the antioxidant-rich brew won't help you shed pounds on its own, there's some evidence that drinking green tea may support your weight loss efforts.
How Might Green Tea Promote Weight Loss?
Green tea contains caffeine, which is known to increase thermogenesis (a biological process involved in burning calories). In a 2007 report from the American Journal of Physiology: Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology, scientists state that green tea may fight the decrease in metabolism that typically accompanies weight loss. According to the report's authors, green tea may also inhibit the effects of catechol-O-methyltransferase (an enzyme known to trigger the breakdown of brain chemicals involved in regulating appetite).
Certain antioxidants found in green tea seem to have a "small positive effect" on weight loss and weight maintenance, according to a report published in the International Journal of Obesity in 2009. In their analysis of 11 studies on green tea and weight loss or weight maintenance, researchers found that green tea antioxidants known as catechins may help increase metabolism.
Still, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) caution that there isn't enough scientific evidence to determine whether green tea is effective for weight loss. However, epigallocatechin gallate (a catechin found in green tea) may help moderately overweight people lose weight, according to the NIH.
Caveats
While green tea is likely safe for most adults, drinking more than five cups a day may lead to caffeine-related side effects (such as headache, nervousness, sleep problems, and irregular heartbeat). The caffeine in green tea may also aggravate some health conditions, including anxiety, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
Using Green Tea
For most adults, moderately increasing green tea intake may yield some weight loss benefits without causing negative health effects. But in order to experience significant weight loss, it's important to combine a healthy diet with regular exercise (including at least two and a half hours of moderate-intensity aerobic activity and two strength-training sessions per week). If you're considering the use of green tea supplements (or any other natural weight loss aid), make sure to consult your physician before beginning treatment.

to watch what you eat in order to prevent unwanted weight gain and
resultant problems. But how will you know what to eat and what not
to? That's what we are here for! Here are a few healthy diet tips
for PCOS patients to follow.
1# A big yes to healthy fats. Olive oil, coconut oil and ghee can
be used in moderation. Unsaturated oils like flaxseed oil, olive
oil, macadamia oils and walnut oil are great. Enjoy stir fried
vegetables and fresh salads in these oils. Also take Omega 3 fish
oils.
2# No to refined and starchy carbs. Reduce white flour, bread,
pasta etc. Cut down potatoes and sugars. Since research says that
higher intake of whole grains may reduce insulin sensitivity, cut
down on whole grains a bit. Women with irregular periods are
advised 40% carbs while those with regular periods may limit it
within 50%. Take non starchy vegetables, fruits with more of

4# Low glycemic foods like soya, linseed, green peas, carrots,
eggplant, broccoli, beans, cauliflower, lettuce, mushrooms, sweet
corns, sweet potatoes, lentils are advised.
5# And, finally, the mantra,"drink more water". Water regulates
your hormonal levels by eliminating the excess hormones.
Keep in mind that according to experts losing even 5% of the body
weight will be helpful to PCOS patients.

[www.keralites.net] Gopala S Raj & R.V. Karnan - Two success stories - One from Poverty & no need for coaching classes [1 Attachment]

Gopala Sundara Raj & R.V. Karnan - Two success stories with a message for IAS aspirants :- While one has proved that poverty is not an impediment to success, the other has shown that there is absolutely no need for coaching centres to clear the country's top examinations.

Mr. Raj comes from Mavila Thoppu, a tiny village near Kilakarai. His mother S. Rajammal and father S. Shanmugavel could not study beyond standards III and V respectively.

Though they thought of putting him in English medium school since the early stage, their abject poverty did not allow them to do so.

However, the perceived disadvantages of having studied in the Tamil medium in no way affected his performance in the Civil Services examinations.

"I have no words to describe my happiness. Raj has not studied in a sophisticated atmosphere. He has brought meaning to our life. The hard work, sheer determination, dedication and sincerity have made him so special in our life. My pain is that his father is no more to hear the happiest news in our lifetime," says S. Rajammal.

Her family owns no land or house and she is residing in a portion of her brother Mariappan's house, a retired school headmaster.

Mr. Raj, who is currently an agricultural scientist in Rajasthan, in his endeavour. His sister, Sundara Yoga Lakshmi, is working with Infosys in Chennai.

Mr Karnan (27) was the all-India topper in the Indian Forest Service examinations in 2007.

His father R. Veeraragavan (56) is working as a librarian at Alagappa Arts College and his mother V. Vijayalakshmi is a sub-registrar in Karaikudi.

"My dream has come true. The Civil Services examinations are all about clearly understanding the methods and patterns well. I didn't join any coaching classes for the preparations," Mr. Karnan told The Hindu over phone from Maharashtra, where he is working as Assistant Conservator of Forests.
