[www.keralites.net] USE OF MOBILE AND SPINE

PLEASE READ AND TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEALTH
Subject: USE OF PHONE & SPINE
This is what looking down at your phone does to your spine

For the sake of your spine, think about how you're looking at your phone.
HOW long do you think you could last with an eight-year old sitting on your head?

According to a new study by spine surgeon Dr Kenneth Hansraj looking down at our phones is the equivalent of having around 27 kgs worth of weight on your neck.
On average, our heads weigh 4-5kgs, but when we are looking down scrolling through Facebook, the gravitational pull is massively increased.
"As the head tilts forward the forces seen by the neck surges to 27 pounds (12kg) at 15 degrees, 40 pounds (18kg) at 30 degrees, 49 pounds (22kg) at 45 degrees and 60 pounds (27kg) at 60 degrees," Hansraj writes in the paper.

The further you look down, the more weight your neck feels. Source: Supplied

Having this sort of pressure on our necks, is of course not a good thing for our health, especially when the average person spends between two to four hours a day in this position.
In the paper, Dr Hansraj cited that good posture when looking at your phone is having your ears aligned with your shoulders and your shoulder blades back.
This will lower body stress, in comparison to poor posture which will stress the spine and possibly lead to early degradation.
It's not just staring down at your phone that is bad for you.
Studies have suggested that radiation from your phone can even cook your eyes.
By cooking, we mean that if your eyes are exposed to the kind of heat and radiation given off by phones for long enough, tiny bubbles can start to form in your eyes. This is a precursor to cataracts.
This happens due to your eyes inability to dissipate the heat into the rest of your body, essentially because it's mostly operating on its own up there.

Studies show that radiation from phones can damage a person's eyes.

Let's not forget how technology can ruin your sleep as well. This is mostly due to the type of 'blue' light that the screen on your phone, tablet or computer emits.
The light reduces the production of melatonin, our natural sleeping hormone which increases sleeping difficulties and causes more daytime sleepiness. To combat this, scientists recommend turning off all devices at least an hour before you go to sleep.

Insomnia? Blame your laptop.

Using your computer all day could also be a big contributor to why your hands and body are aching. Any repetitive movement can result in Repetitive Strain Syndrome and it can affect any part of the body.
But with all that typing, tapping and clicking, it's usually our hands and arms that suffer problems, with millions of people worldwide now developing RSI.
Symptoms include pain, muscle weakness, swelling, numbness and restricted mobility of the joint. It will typically increase after a long session of computer or device use, according to the health department.
The best cure is rest, continued use will make the problem worse.

Using a computer all day can cause Repetitive Strain Syndrome.

And finally, let's not forget those who listen to their music too loud.
About 37 per cent of hearing loss in Australia is caused by preventable noise exposure, acocording to HearNet.
And one in five teenagers today has some form of hearing loss - around 30 per cent more than in the 1990s.
Our exposure to dangerous noise levels through our headphones is on the increase, with Australians losing their hearing much earlier than previous generations.
The maximum acceptable exposure to noise over a day is 85 decibels - the equivalent of listening to the sound of traffic on the street from the footpath.
Our devices can reach up to 120dB. Osteopaths say that as a rule of thumb, you should only use devices at levels up to 60 per cent of maximum volume for a total of 60 minutes a day. If you can't hear what's going on around you, it's too loud.
Put down your phone!
iPhones, Androids and smartphones are everywhere but it's the holiday season, a time to spend with family and friends and take a break from ever-present screens. Unless, of course, you're one of the millions of phone addicts out there. In his latest song for the Guardian, Joe Stilgoe urges you to put down your phone and reconnect with the outside world.

[www.keralites.net] FOUR AYURVEDIC OILS FOR ARTHRITIS

Four Ayurvedic Herbs and One Integrated Oil That Relieve Arthritis Better Than Medication
The single most prescribed drugs in the world are for pain. Popular anti-inflammatory drugs increase the risk of heart attack and cardiovascular disease. However, natural equivalents used in Ayurvedic medicine are not only more effective and reducing long-term pain, but they carry no high-risk side effects.
Your poor joints are stiff, inflamed and achy from osteoarthritis--but the medications that reduce your pain also can have serious side effects, such as gastrointestinal bleeding, liver and kidney damage, and increased risk for heart attack and stroke.
Consider the Ayurvedic approach to osteoarthritis treatment, which relies on natural herbs and spices to bring relief. There are no dramatic side-effects and the potential reduction in pain can be as high as 90%, blocking enzymes that produce inflammation.
Mahanarayan Oil - One Amazing Oil
Mahanarayan Oil is an ancient Ayurvedic recipe that delivers powerful muscle and joint targeting herbs. A nourishing and strengthening oil with rejuvenating and analgesic qualities, it is used to soothe arthritis, sore muscles and tendons and prevents over-use damage. In Ayurvedic terms, Mahanarayan Oil is particularly good for supporting rejuvenation of joints affected by wear and tear, joint space narrowing, and synovial fluid dehydration.
The oil can be incorporated into treatment by applying locally to areas where the client is experiencing physical discomfort. It may also be diluted with base oil and used in Deep Tissue Massage.
Four Herbs That Destroy Arthritis Pain
Nancy Lonsdorf, MD, author of The Ageless Woman: Natural Health and Beauty After recommends four specific herbs effective in treating arthritis.
The following four Ayurvedic arthritis remedies have been used in ancient Indian medicines and in cooking for more than 5,000 years. And they really work--a study presented at a meeting of the American College of Rheumatology showed a combination herbal Ayurvedic therapy to be as effective in treating knee osteoarthritis as the commonly prescribed medication celecoxib (Celebrex).
1) Boswellia (Indian frankincense). This comes from the resin of theBoswellia serrata plant. It works by blocking an enzyme involved in the formation of leukotrienes, chemicals that trigger inflammation. Note:Boswellia may cause a reaction in people who are allergic to ragweed, and it can irritate the gastrointestinal tract (especially if taken alone rather than in a balanced combination formula as traditionally used) .
2) Turmeric. The active ingredient in this spice, curcumin, interferes with three important inflammation-producing enzymes--so it disrupts the inflammatory process at three different stages, said Dr. Lonsdorf. Turmeric also may provide some protection against the damage that pain-relieving medications can do to the gastrointestinal tract. Curcumin has been found to actually outperform pharmaceuticals while preventing disease. Turmeric contains more than two dozen anti-inflammatory compounds, including sixdifferent COX-2-inhibitors (the COX-2 enzyme promotes pain, swelling and inflammation; inhibitors selectively block that enzyme). The component in turmeric most often cited for its healthful effects - is a multifaceted anti-inflammatory agent, and studies of the efficacy of curcumin have demonstrated positive changes in arthritic symptoms.
3) Ginger. Ginger is one of the best pain killers in the world having analgesic properties like the popular ibuprofen, only better. It contains a quartet, gingerols, paradols, shogaols, and zingerone which are active ingredients to reduce pain. Ginger reduces pain-causing prostaglandin levels in the body. A study by researchers found that when people who were suffering from arthritis pain were given ginger, they all experienced improvement. Various studies have demonstrated ginger's ability to reduce pain and inflammation by interfering with inflammatory enzymes.Bonus: Ginger also aids digestion. Why should that matter? Because according to Ayurvedic principals, poor digestion is a primary trigger for arthritis. Dr. Lonsdorf explained, "When we eat improper foods or our digestion is weak, food is not broken down into small molecules, so larger-than-normal molecules get absorbed into the bloodstream. These biochemical impurities circulate, eventually getting localized in a tissue and initiating swelling. When the affected tissue is a joint, the result is arthritis."
Ashwagandha. Ashwagandha or Indian winter cherry is considered one of the most important herbs in ayurvedic system of medicines. Because of its vast area of application, ayurvedic physicians have used it extensively in curing people from their ailments. It works in suppressing arthritis pain and any pain for that matter. It possesses this property due to its natural potency, which helps in eradicating pain Due to its properties it has gained lots of respect in the eyes of herbal healers. Lab studies suggest that it has anti-inflammatory properties that protect against cartilage damage. In addition, animal studies provide evidence that the herb combats stress. Dr. Lonsdorf explained, "When we are stressed, the hormones cortisol and epinephrine cause a breakdown of various body tissues. Ashwagandha helps alleviate the damaging effects of stress by restoring the proper hormonal balance to the nervous system, which in turn strengthens the immune system and further reduces inflammation."Caution: Since Ashwagandha makes your immune system more active, it is not appropriate for people who have an autoimmune disorder, including rheumatoid arthritis.
USING AYURVEDIC HERBS
Ayurvedic herbal products are available in health-food stores and online. For maximum convenience and effect, Dr. Lonsdorf recommended that osteoarthritis patients take an herbal supplement that combines several of the herbs and spices listed above as well as other natural ingredients that further support joint and bone health. These products may not contain turmeric, so Dr. Lonsdorf suggested using the spice liberally in the kitchen. "Turmeric added to food is more important than in a formula because you can get much a greater quantity that way. I recommend adding turmeric to every meal and cooking it into each dish, even if only in small amounts, for its cumulative anti-inflammatory and antioxidant protection," she said.
Important: According to a Boston University study, some commercial Ayurvedic herbal remedies contain lead, mercury and/or arsenic in amounts exceeding regulatory standards. Dr. Lonsdorf endorses Maharishi Ayurveda (www.mapi.com), a company that has been in business for nearly 30 years. If you are interested in a different brand, to guard against contamination, Dr. Lonsdorf suggested, "Contact the seller to make sure the company tests every batch in the US for heavy metals, as well as for parasites and fungus."
To make sure that the specific ingredients are safe and appropriate for you and to get dosage recommendations, consult a physician who is knowledgeable about Ayurvedic medicine. To find such a practitioner, visit the Web site of the Light on Ayurveda Education Foundation.
Try this Ayurvedic approach for eight weeks to see whether these remedies relieve your osteoarthritis symptoms. If they do, Dr. Lonsdorf said that you can continue to take them indefinitely, reducing to the lowest dose that maintains your improvement.

[www.keralites.net] AYURVEDIC CURE FOR FRACTURES

Ayurvedic treatment for fractures
Fracture treatment in AyurvedaFracture of a bone can occur at any time to anybody, during a fall, or an accident, and at times due to osteoporosis, and bone cancer. Whatever the case, it requires immediate attention. The Ayurvedic term for fracture isBhagna. Ayurveda offers effective treatment for rejoining bones and restoring them to their original form and strength.
Generally, bone being a living tissue, constantly builds and hence rejoins and nourishes. Ayurveda is quite popular in its methods of treating fractures, with the treatment practices for bone fractures being centuries old, starting from the age of Susruta, the first-ever surgeon in the history of medicine.
In Ayurveda, bone fractures are classified into two types " dislocation and fracture. Ayurveda adopts the ˜touch and analyze method for diagnosis. The diagnosis is made by touching and analysing the appearance of the affected part. The treatment methods adopted are bone setting, medicines, therapies, splints or slings, as required. Splints are made with bamboo pieces in different shapes and thickness.
There are traditional bone setters and Kalari masters, the martial art practitioners in Kerala, who are experts in this field. They have sufficient skill in manipulating bones and aligning it in the right manner, which is vital in management of bone fractures, than medicines taken internally.
In fact, bone setting is a special art that requires practical knowledge. It involves pulling and adjusting the bones gently, back to their original position. Thereafter, herbal medicines in the form of pastes are applied to rejoin the splints and the bones. When joining, the bones, muscle, ligaments and tendons are also healed.
One of the main advantages of ayurvedic treatment for bone fracture or dislocation, is its external and internal use of herbal medicines in various forms, which shows great results in reducing pain, healing wounds, and joining bones. Some ingredients used when making such medicines are egg white, wheat flour, milk, ghee and sugar, along with herbal pastes such as Kasamarda and Kumari.
Oil massage therapies are also a popular method adopted in Ayurveda, in shaping the bones back to their original form. Methods such as steaming, and application of herbal pastes, also reduce pain and inflammation. Depending on the condition of the patient,Panchakarma Therapy is also done.
In cases where fracture has occurred on marma points (vital areas), special attention is required. Only expert Ayurvedacharyas can manage and treat complicated multiple fractures.
The main aim of the treatment process in fractures is to restore functional abilities of the individual. In cases of bone problems occurring due to old age and chronic diseases, treatment is difficult and may take longer time, but, the process of healing is quicker in young people.
The duration of rehabilitation also depends on the type of fracture, and associated soft tissue involvement, location of fracture, and method of stabilization. Depending on the stability of fracture, motion exercises may be recommended for adjacent joints, followed by strengthening exercises. Once, the healing is restored completely, the individual can continue with regular activities of daily living.

[www.keralites.net] HOW TO INCREASE YOUR GOOD CHOLESTEROL

How To Increase Your Good Cholesterol (HDL)
lDid you know that even if you ate a completely cholesterol-free diet, your body would make approximately 1,000 mg daily to function properly?
So, thought the term 'cholesterol' always seems to be having a negative connotation, there is a lot of good side to it. On the other hand, too much cholesterol in the body can lead to serious problems like heart disease. Many factors can contribute to high cholesterol, but the best part is that there are different things you can do to control it.
What is cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a fat, or lipid. It is a sterol produced by the liver. It performs three main functions:
It helps to build and maintain cell membrane.
Bile Production – It makes up the bile acids that work to digest food in the intestine.
Hormone Production – allows the body to make hormones, like estrogen in women and testosterone in men.
Cholesterol flows through our body via our bloodstream. Since cholesterol is not soluble in water it tends to not mix well with blood. Therefore, the liver packages it with protein and other compounds creating a lipoprotein before it is released into the blood stream. Cholesterol is then transported through the bloodstream in this lipoprotein.
HDL and LDL
When the lipoprotein has more protein than cholesterol, it is called high density lipoprotein (HDL) or good cholesterol. When the lipoprotein has more cholesterol than protein, it is called low density lipoprotein (LDL) or bad cholesterol.
Low-density lipoproteins tend to deposit cholesterol on artery walls. Gradually, over time it builds up and eventually interferes with blood flow. But the HDL is useful as it seems to take cholesterol back to the liver, where it can be eliminated from the body.
How to increase HDL ?
A colourful meal plate is a sure shot way of increasing HDL.
Niacin -Niacin is a B vitamin which is contained in a variety of foods. Niacin, in particular, helps to raise "good" cholesterol, and lowers "bad" cholesterol. Foods such as tuna, chicked, pork and liver are high in this vitamin content. Beef, mushrooms and avocado also contain niacin. Vegetarians can opt to take a B-complex vitamin as there are fewer options for them.
Nuts – Walnuts, almonds, peanuts, pistachios, peanuts hazelnuts are all good sources of heart-healthy fats and are great to add to your diet. You can eat them raw, baked or slightly roasted and even add to dishes like pasta or rice. Watch the quantity though.
Olive oil – It is high in unsaturated fats and can help you elevate your HDL. You can replace butter and fried foods with foods cooked lightly in a heart-healthy olive oil. However remember, oil is healthy, but it's high in fat and calories, so practise moderation.
Fiber – Foods like oatmeal, bran, barley, prunes and apples having high level of fiber can help rise up your HDL while reducing LDL. A couple of servings a day of such foods can have a positive effect on your HDL.
Cut Your Sugar Intake
Cutting back on the "empty' carb calories that come from high sugar foods puts you on the right track of the HDL-LDL level in your body.
Regular Aerobic Exercise
Make exercise a priority now if you have been giving it a back seat till date. Every little effort you take counts and exercising is a tried and tested method of increasing HDL cholesterol over time. Regular aerobic exercise (any exercise, such as walking, jogging or cycling, that raises your heart rate for 20 to 30 minutes at a time) may be the most effective way to increase HDL levels.
Now that you know how to boost your HDL get started on your fitness track.

[www.keralites.net] HEALTH BENEFITS OF TULSI

Tulsi Health Benefits, How to Use it, and Importance in Hinduism
Tulsi is a very useful medicinal plant found in India
Tulsi Health Benefits, How to Use it, and Importance in Hinduism
Tulsi is a very useful medicinal plant found in India         What is Tulsi?
Popularly known in the western world as Holy basil, the Latin name of tulsi is Ocimum tenuiflorum or Ocimum sanctum. The tulsi plant is a heavily branched small shrub which is widely grown in India for medicinal as well as religious purposes.
The word "tulsi" means "the incomparable plant". The plant can grow up to a height of about 60 cm and has hairy stems with oval-shaped leaves of about 5 cm in length. There are two main varieties of the Holy basil, the one with the green leaves is called Rama or Shri tulsi and the one with the reddish leaves is called Krishna or Shyama tulsi.
Tulsi is used in many forms which includes in the form of a tulsi tea, juice, fresh leaves, and dried powdered form.
Health Benefits of Tulsi
Tulsi is widely used in Ayurveda for medicinal purposes. Eugenol, found in Ocimum sanctum, is believed to be the main constituent responsible for the medicinal properties of the Holy basil. The plant has also been found to have antimicrobial properties, thanks to the ursolic acid and carvacrol constituents found in it.
Along with antimicrobial properties, the phytochemicals present in tulsi offer antioxidant as well as immune-enhancing qualities. It also has adaptogenic properties, that is, it enhances the body's ability to adapt to stress.
Let's take a look at some of the medicinal uses of the Holy basil leaves.
Respiratory benefits of tulsi
For asthma and bronchitis
The leaves of the Tulsi are effective expectorants and promote the release of mucus in bronchitis and asthma, thus, facilitating breathing. A decoction made of tulsi leaves, honey and ginger is effective for asthma, bronchitis and influenza.
For cold and flu
Chewing the leaves of the Holy basil helps relieve symptoms of cold and flu.
For sore throat
Boil a few leaves of Tulsi in about half a liter of water. Drink this tulsi tea or use it as a gargle at least three times a day. You can also add cloves to this decoction for more benefits.
Relieves fever
The antimicrobial properties of the tulsi leaves make it an excellent treatment for fever. As we know, fever is not a disease by itself. In fact, it is caused by infections caused due to viruses, bacteria, fungus, protozoa or due to allergens.
Tulsi is quite effective in bringing down temperature and can safely be used with children too. It also protects an individual from malarial and dengue fever, which are caused due to mosquito bites.
The leaves can be boiled in half a liter of water and mixed with honey and milk. Tulsi extract added to water can also be given every 2-3 hours for bringing down the fever.
Beneficial for the kidneys
Tulsi juice and honey taken regularly for 6 months may help in expelling a kidney stone that is smaller than 5mm through the urinary tract. Regular intake of tulsi leaves may also reduce uric acid levels and promote proper cleansing of the kidneys through urination.
Effective for skin disorders
The juice of the tulsi plant may help in the treatment of skin diseases such as ringworm and leucoderma.
Tulsi leaves can be applied as poultice on the infected area to cure skin diseases. You can also add a decoction of tulsi leaves to your bath water to cure infections as well as prevent their occurrence.
It is also effective for insect as well as snake and scorpion bites. It can be taken internally as well as applied on the infected area. Take a teaspoon of the tulsi extract every 3 hours. Apply the extract on the affected area as and when required.
Cardiovascular benefits
It may reduce blood cholesterol levels and have benefits for the heart. Its antioxidant properties protect the heart from free radical damage. Regular intake of tulsi tea also reduces high blood pressure.
Beneficial for the nerves and brain
Tulsi acts a nerve tonic and improves brain functioning. It improves concentration and sharpens memory.
Oral and dental Benefits
The antibacterial properties of the Holy basil keep your mouth and teeth free from bacteria. Tulsi juice works as an excellent mouth freshener, prevents bad breath, and cures ulcers in the mouth.
It also prevents the occurrence of dental cavities, tartar and plaque. Tulsi is also beneficial for strengthening gums and preventing tooth decay.
Instead of chewing the leaves, use tulsi tea for promoting oral and dental health since the mercury in the leaves may damage your teeth. You can also use the dried and powdered leaves as toothpaste for curing dental and gum diseases such as pyorrhea.
Beneficial as an eye wash
Regular consumption of tulsi may protect your eyes from various diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. It also soothes the eyes and reduces strain caused due to constant computer use.
Soak the leaves of the Holy basil in a cup of water and let it stay overnight. Strain the water and use it as an eye wash. You can also dip cotton ball into this liquid and place it on your eyes. Blink a few times to get relief in eye strain and other eye diseases. You can also instill two drops of basil juice.
Good for headaches
Applying a poultice of pounded tulsi leaves on the forehead helps relieve headache caused due to heat, stress and eye strain. You can also drink tulsi tea to relieve migraine and other stress headaches.
Anti-ageing properties
Its antioxidant properties prevent the body from damages caused due to free radicals, thus, delaying the aging process and the appearance of wrinkles and other signs of aging.
More benefits of tulsi
Chemicals found in tulsi may decrease pain and inflammation. It may lower blood sugar in diabetics. Although more studies are needed, preliminary research has revealed that the antioxidant properties of tulsi seed oil may slow down the progression of certain types of cancer.
The Holy basil may be beneficial for the treatment of tuberculosis as well. Tulsi extracts may also help in weight loss because of its ability to reduce cortisol levels.
Other Uses of Tulsi
If you are in a country like India, you need to use something that keeps the mosquitoes away from you. Rub tulsi oil on the exposed areas of your body to keep mosquitoes and other insects away from you.
Beads made of this plant are considered to have medicinal as well as divine properties. It is believed that tulsi protects one from negative influences.

Tulsi in Hinduism
As mentioned above, the Holy basil possesses excellent medicinal properties. This is probably one of the main reasons why this plant is so revered in Hinduism. Hindus consider their house as incomplete if they don't have a tulsi plant within the place itself.
In Hindu mythology, tulsi is very dear to Lord Vishnu. On the 11th bright day of the month of Kartika (around mid-October) in the Hindu calendar, tulsi is ceremonially married to Lord Vishnu in what is called tulsi vivah. This symbolic marriage denotes the beginning of one of the most auspicious periods for marriage in Hindu culture.
It is usually the woman of the household who take care of the plant. They water it, light the diya (small earthen lamp), and worship the plant after taking a bath in the morning. It is considered to be auspicious to have the Holy basil as it is believed to promote longevity and happiness for the residents of the household .Herb Basil Tulsi Holy D71104A (Green) 100 Organic Seeds by David's Garden Seeds
Make Tulsi an Integral Part of Your Life
The tulsi plant can be used to cure most of your common diseases. It may also offer anti-aging benefits as well as be useful for diabetics and people with heart disorders. You can easily grow the Holy basil in a small pot. If it is not possible to grow the plant, keep a bottle of tulsi juice or oil or dried tulsi powder in your home for treating common illnesses such as cold and flu and insect bites.
