[www.keralites.net] Advice from a nutritionist

 Advice From a Nutritionist
We were lucky enough to interview a professional nutrionist at Baba-mail, and she gave us a list of what she calls: "The most important things about food products people may not know."
We highly advise printing this out and hanging it on the fridge!
1. Plastic work surfaces accumulate bacteria, soak them in water with vinegar. It's advisable and better to use wooden work surfaces, it turns out that they contain natural disinfectants.
2. Wines:
Red wine - shouldn't be used eight hours afteropening.
White wine - Keep refrigerated after opening and it can be used for the next 10-12 hours only.
3. "Stevia" - or 'sugar leaf' is a plant similar to mint, 30 times as sweet as sugar and has no calories. 1/3 of a leaf can sweeten a drink, and you can also purchase an extract.
4. If you want to freeze fruit, you should pour sugar on them prior to freezing and they retain the flavor.
5. Preparing the dough, use cold water in the winter and ice water in the summer - to inflate the dough to its maximum height.
6. There is almost no difference between the percentages of fat in milk. Drinking milk is always at 3% fat. 0% fat milk is actually milk water (the water remaining in the process of churning cream, butter, cheese).
7. Separating plastic and margarine is one molecule only! Margarine contains transfat that does not not melt in your veins.
8. Melting cheese is the residue of hard white cheese, plus a yellow food coloring produced from coal tar and is considered one of the most dangerous food colors. It causes allergies and hyperactivity, especially in children, among other dangerous effects.
9. Egg shells have 100% calcium. If you have plants it's a good idea to water them with water and egg shells.
10. Olive oil put in the refrigerator thickens. Olive oil is not green, but gold. The more green it is , the more food coloring it contains.

11. Sugar and alcohol never freeze.
12. Strawberry is a pest magnet and so can be very harmful if not treated properly.
13. Soup powder is painted salt. You should not use it at all and it can be replaced with salt and pepper.
14. Black pepper or ground black pepper found in the supermarket - is not pepper. Buy only those that is ground on the spot.
15. You shouldn't be able to pour honey. Real honey is hard and remains so.
16. Puff pastry contains huge levels of fats - I don't recommend it. But if you
do, then remember that Puff pastry shouldn't be frozen after preparation.
17. Defrosting must be gradual - from the freezer to the fridge and not straight out.
18. All white sugar addicts - Eat whole wheat products slowly and your addiction will subside.
19. Black olives, in rings or canned, are not black olives, but blackened olives.
21. Lettuce and corn - are not digested in the body.
22. Anyone who lacks vitamin B12, therei is a solution: Freshly crushed flax seeds and / or cashews.
23. It is recommended to prepare mashed potatos with red skin and crush them with a potato masher so as not to break the starch structure and accidently make a puree that is liquid and sticky.
24. Saccharin (fake sugar) = poison - do not use!
25. A spoon of sugar contains only 13-16 calories.
26. Tip of the week: "Look at what you buy and what the products actually contain - be intelligent consumers and not part of the herd"
27. Dairy products should be stored at the bottom of the fridge - where it's colder.
28. Eggs:
A.Wash hands after each touch of the eggs (remember where they come from).
B. Storing in refrigerator door is always better, away from other products and never left in the supermarket carton. If the door is not possible, place at the top of the refrigerator, where it's warmer, and avoid proximity to other products, especially meat / poultry / fish undergoing cooking.
C. Do not wash unless you use them immediately.

[www.keralites.net] POPE FRANCI LIST - WORTH READING

POPE FRANCIS LIST- WORTH READING
Pope Francis list
1. Don't gossip.
It's one of our hobbies. For Francis, it's also one of the most evil activities. The Catholic leader denounces gossip as "murder."
He feels so strongly about it that in less than a year as pontiff, Francis has preached against gossip in at least 6 different instances.
He says when we gossip, we "are doing what Judas did," and "begin to tear the other person to pieces."
"Every time we judge our brother in our hearts or worse when we speak badly of them with others, we are murdering Christians," Francis says. "There is no such thing as innocent slander."
2. Finish your meals.
No leftovers, please.
Nearly 870 million people suffer from chronic malnutrition. The Pope says: "We should all remember... that throwing food away is like stealing from the tables of the poor, the hungry! I encourage everyone to reflect on the problem of thrown away and wasted food to identify ways and means that, by seriously addressing this issue, are a vehicle of solidarity and sharing with the needy."
3. Make time for others.
Tending to 1.2 billion members, Francis seems too busy for anything else.
That is, until he calls up strangers. Or entertains a random biker Or sends a handwritten letter to a Jesuit he has never met.
The Jesuit who got the letter, Fr James Martin, says Francis inspires him "to be more generous in my own life with my time."
Martin says: "If the Pope can find time to be kind to others, if he can pause to say thank you, if he can take a moment to make someone feel appreciated, then so can I. So can we."
4. Choose the 'more humble' purchase.
Take it from the head of state who rides a 29-year-old Renault.
In July, he warns against luxurious lives that seek "the joy of the world in the latest smartphone, the fastest car." "Cars are necessary," he says, "but take a more humble one. Think of how many children die of hunger and dedicate the savings to them."
The Pope preaches against materialism. "Certainly, possessions, money, and power can give a momentary thrill, the illusion of being happy, but they end up possessing us and making us always want to have more, never satisfied. 'Put on Christ' in your life, place your trust in him, and you will never be disappointed!"
5. Meet the poor 'in the flesh.'
Sure, we donate to charity. But this is not enough for Francis. Commitment to the poor, he says, must be "person to person, in the flesh." "It is not enough to mediate this commitment through institutions, which obviously help because they have a multiplying effect, but that is not enough. They do not excuse us from our establishing personal contact with the needy. The sick must be cared for, even when we find them repulsive and repugnant. Those in prison must be visited."
He calls for long-term commitment. "Hospitality in itself isn't enough. It's not enough to give a sandwich if it isn't accompanied by the possibility of learning to stand on one's own feet. Charity that does not change the situation of the poor isn't enough."
6. Stop judging others.
In the same way he denounces gossip, Francis condemns prejudice.
He reminds "intolerant" Catholics, for one, to respect atheists. "If we, each doing our own part, if we do good to others, if we meet there, doing good, and we go slowly, gently, little by little, we will make that culture of encounter: we need that so much. We must meet one another doing good."
He also says of gays: "If someone is gay and seeks the Lord with good will, who am I to judge?" Francis urges us "to keep watch over ourselves." "Let us not forget that hatred, envy, and pride defile our lives!"
7. Befriend those who disagree.
What can we do to our worst critics? We can take our cue from Francis.
In November, Francis surprises Mario Palmaro, a traditionalist who wrote the article, 'The Reason Why We Don't Like This Pope.'" "He just wanted to tell me that he is praying for me," says Palmaro who is gravely ill, in an article by the Catholic News Agency.
Francis does this in line with what he calls a "culture of encounter."
He says in July: "When leaders in various fields ask me for advice, my response is always the same: dialogue, dialogue, dialogue. It is the only way for individuals, families, and societies to grow, the only way for the life of peoples to progress, along with the culture of encounter, a culture in which all have something good to give and all can receive something good in return. Others always have something to give me, if we know how to approach them in a spirit of openness and without prejudice."
8. Make commitments, such as marriage.
Don't be afraid to say "forever." Francis advises the youth, for instance, not to fear marriage. The Pope says: "Today, there are those who say that marriage is out of fashion; in a culture of relativism and the ephemeral, many preach the importance of 'enjoying' the moment. They say that it is not worth making a life-long commitment, making a definitive decision, 'forever,' because we do not know what tomorrow will bring."
"I ask you, instead, to be revolutionaries, to swim against the tide; yes, I am asking you to rebel against this culture that sees everything as temporary and that ultimately believes that you are incapable of responsibility, that you are incapable of true love. I have confidence in you and I pray for you. Have the courage 'to swim against the tide.' Have the courage to be happy," he says.
9. Make it a habit to 'ask the Lord.'
Bothered about the future? Pray, the Pope urges us especially the youth.
"Dear young people," he says, "some of you may not yet know what you will do with your lives. Ask the Lord, and he will show you the way. You too can ask the Lord: What do you want me to do? What path am I to follow?"
10. Be happy.
The true Christian, says the Pope, exudes great joy. He says keeping this joy to ourselves "will make us sick in the end. Francis says in a homily. "Joy cannot be held at heel: it must be let go. Joy is a pilgrim virtue. It is a gift that walks, walks on the path of life, that walks with Jesus: preaching, proclaiming Jesus, proclaiming joy, lengthens and widens that path."
Francis says, "The Christian sings with joy, and walks, and carries this joy." This joy, he reminds us, should translate to love of neighbor.._,___

[www.keralites.net] COMPLETE GUIDE TO PLASTIC BOTTLE SAFETY

A Complete Guide to Plastic Bottle Safety!
We have been using plastic bottles all our lives. But let's face it - we all tend to be a bit skeptical about the actual consequences they have on our health. We are right in knowing they contain harmful chemicals, but the degree of this harm varies according to the type of plastic used. You may never have been informed of the ways plastic bottles harm us and which types of plastic cause the most harm - but the answers all lie at the bottom of your bottle.

If you flip your plastic bottle over you are likely to see letters marked on or close to its base. Some common ones include PET, PVC, HDP and PP. If these don't sound familiar to you, you're not alone - we are going to help you decipher their meaning. This will hopefully help you make wiser choices when buying water bottles.
Here's what each label means:
water-bottles
1. PET or PETE:
This one probably sounds familiar. It is the most commonly used plastic material in packaging and consumer products, used especially for water and soft drink bottles. This kind of plastic is only intended for single use and is difficult to decontaminate, meaning that repeated use can be harmful. The more you use it, the higher the risk of leach and bacteria. Also, the metals and chemicals released by this material may tamper with our body's hormonal balance.
water-bottles
2. HDP or HDPE:
HDPE is a harder type of plastic often used for milk jugs, detergent bottles, oil bottles, toys and some plastic bags. Experts claim that this is the safest kind of plastic that you can choose when buying bottled water, because it barely releases any chemicals. This means your water will be cleaner, hence causing minimal harmful effects on your health
water-bottles
3. PVC or 3V:
This symbol indicates the use of PVC, a highly toxic plastic that is soft and flexible, and is generally used for food wrapping, oil bottles, teething rings, toys, and blister packaging. The chemicals it releases are said to have serious consequences on our body, since they pose effects on our hormones. Experts suggest to avoid packaging made from the PVC and try to find an alternative to it.

4. LDPE:
Although this type of plastic does not release chemicals into the water, you are unlikely to see this label on your water bottle, because the LDPE material is not used in its production. Rather, you would find it in food packaging, in the case of which you should still try to avoid it. LDPE may still release highly dangerous chemicals in the foods you eat.

5. PP:
Yogurt cups and syrup packing are made of this white-colored or semi-transparent type of plastic, referred to as PP (polypropylene plastic). This kind of material is tough, lightweight and heat-resistant. This material won't melt easily if heated. Overall, it is a rather safe type of plastic, and it can also block out moisture, grease and chemicals.
water-bottles
6. PS:
PS stands for Polystyrene - a type of inexpensive and lightweight plastic that is used for a range of products. We have often used this type of plastic for disposable styrofoam drinking cups, egg cartons, plastic picnic cutlery, and take-out "clamshell" food containers. PS should be restricted to short-term usage only, since dangerous carcinogenic substances could be released from it when heated.
water-bottles
7. PC or non-labeled plastic:
This is potentially the most dangerous plastic found out there. If you ever find the "PC" label on plastic bottles (or no label at all), make sure you steer clear of it as much as possible. It refers to a catch-all category for polycarbonate materials and "other" plastics, which contain chemicals that are likely to leach into the food or drink products it makes contact with. Examples of the use of this material include sports water bottles and food containers. It is highly discouraged to reuse or recycle this type of plastic.
Note: These kinds of plastics are not only used for food and drink products. We also find them in everyday items in which they may not directly affect our health, such as water pipes, signs, clothing, furniture, shower curtains, textiles, stationery, insulation, diapers, medical equipment, etc. Nonetheless, we should always be knowledgeable about the materials and chemicals included in the products we buy, taking extra care on the ones that contain food and drinks.
