WHY SOAKED ALMONDS ARE BETTER?
Almonds grow on trees in a pale green perforated shell. When an almond is attached to the tree, it is known as drupe. But almonds aren't the only ones that grow in a shell - Olives, prunes and apricots also grow in a hard casing and are found on trees.
Raw Almonds vs Soaked Almonds
If your mother pleaded with you every morning to eat your daily dose of soaked almonds, then she may have been right. Choosing between soaked almonds and raw almonds isn't just a matter of taste, it's about picking the healthier option.
Almonds don't add to body weight
Why soaked almonds are better - Firstly, the brown peel of almonds contains tannin which inhibits nutrient absorption. Once you soak almonds the peel comes off easily and allows the nut to release all nutrients easily.
How to soak? Soak a handful of almonds in half a cup of water. Cover them and allow them to soak for 8 hours. Drain the water, peel off the skin and store them in plastic container. These soaked almonds will last you for about a week.
Benefits of soaked almonds:
1. Help with digestion - Soaking almonds helps in releasing enzymes which in turn help with digestion. Soaking almonds releases enzyme lipase which is beneficial for digestion of fats.
2. Help with weight-loss - The monounsaturated fats in almonds curb your appetite and keep you full. So feel free to snack on them because they'll help you avoid binge-eating and trigger weight-loss. (Snack on these to burn belly fat)
3. Almonds keep your heart healthy, reduce bad cholesterol (low density lipoprotein) and increase good cholesterol (high density lipoprotein).
4. They are a good source of antioxidants: Vitamin E present in soaked almonds works as an antioxidant which inhibits free radical damage that prevents ageing and inflammation.
5. Fight Cancer: Soaked almonds contain Vitamin B17 which is vital for fighting cancer.
6. Flavonoid present in almonds suppresses tumor growth.
7. Help in lowering and maintaining glucose levels and regulating high blood pressure. (Eat nuts to control blood sugar and fat)
8. Soaked almonds contain folic acid which reduces birth defects.

2 Types Of Salts - Sendha Namak (Rock Salt) And Kala Namak (Black Salt) And Their Health Benefits :-
Some common types of salts are :

Table salt - This is the regular refined salt, that has added chemicals, that we consume everyday in our food.
Kosher salt - This is a large grained irregular shaped crystal salt mainly used for removing as much blood from meat as possible according to the Jewish dietary laws.
Sea salt - This salt is produced from the sea water.
Pickling salt - A very fine salt without any additives used in brines used to pickle foods.
Celtic salt - It is made by solar evaporation of water from the Celtic sea.
Seasoned salt - This is a variety of salts to which herbs are added, like garlic salt, onion salt etc.
Sendha namak (Rock salt) - A large crystalline salt usually used for making ice cream in ice cream machines. Food grade rock salt is available to use in cooking.
Kala namak (Black salt) - A dark reddish black colored crystalline salt that turns a pinkish grey color when ground. It has a distinct sulfurous odor and taste.
According to Ayurveda, Sendha namak or Rock salt is the best salt for eating. The next best is Kala namak or Black salt.

Sendha namak is mined from underground deposits of dried up lakes. It is unrefined, non iodized and without added anti caking agents. It is white to pink to blue in color.

This salt is lower in sodium than regular table salt and contains 94 trace minerals as opposed to just 3 of these in the common table salt. As this salt is pure, it is used in religious fasts in India. It does not contain the toxic wastes that sea salt has because of the polluted waters today.

Sendha namak or rock salt is used in Ayurvedic medicines as it treats disorders arising from disturbances in the 3 doshas.

Rock salt benefits the heart, is good for diabetics, prevents osteoporosis, reduces depression and stress, prevents and treats muscle cramps, numbness and tingling sensations, regulates blood pressure, keeps the blood vessels flexible, maintains the correct acid-alkaline levels, helps in digestion, relieves a number of skin problems, benefits in relieving arthritic problems etc.

It is more cooling than sea salt and can be used in small quantities even when other salts have been prohibited.

In India rock salt or sendha namak is used in making chutneys, raita ( a variety of yogurts), chaats, snacks etc.

It lowers the freezing point of water and when sprinkled on ice is used in ice cream making machines. Rock salt is also applied on roads to prevent ice formation on roads in winter and even on ice to make it soft for easy removal.

Rock salt is the best salt for consumption and replacing the common salt with sendha namak completely for those suffering with arthritis will offer them a lot of relief.

Sendha salt (commonly known as rock salt) is more beneficial than other edible salts for patients suffering from chronic kidney disease.

Kala Namak (Black Salt)

Black salt or Kala namak is a dark brown almost black colored crystalline salt that changes to a pinkish grey powder once it is ground. It is also called sanchal. It has a sulfurous smell much like boiled eggs because of the sulphur in it.

Kala namak is rich in iron and many other trace minerals and is cooling in nature. The dark color is due to its iron content.This salt is obtained from the natural salt mines in Northern India and Pakistan.

Kala namak or Black salt is extensively used in Ayurvedic medicine. It is also used as a condiment in Indian cooking and is added to chaat, chutneys, sprinkled on fruits and other Indian snacks before eating. It tastes great on cut vegetables too.

Black salt is low in sodium. It is also much used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat health issues like indigestion, constipation, bloating, gas, flatulence and heartburn. It is also used to treat goiter and hysteria, poor vision, high blood pressure, anemia,. It ensures proper sodium/phosphorus balance.

Ayurvedic toothpastes contain Kala namak as one of its ingredients.

A wonderful prayer for those above 40...
Almighty God you know that I am growing older.
Keep me from becoming too talkative, from repeating all my jokes and anecdotes, and particularly keep me from falling into the tiresome habit of expressing an opinion on every subject.
Release me from craving to straighten out everyone's affairs.
Keep my mind free from recital of endless details.
Give me wings to get to the point.
Give me the grace, dear GOD, to listen to others as they describe their aches and pains.
Help me endure the boredom with patience and keep my lips sealed, for my own aches and pains are increasing in number and intensity, and the pleasure of discussing them is becoming sweeter as the years go by.
Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally, I might be mistaken. Keep me reasonably sweet.
I do not wish to be a saint (Saints are so hard to live with), but a sour old person is the work of the devil.
Make me thoughtful, but not moody,; helpful, but not pushy; independent, yet able to accept with graciousness favors that others wish to bestow on me.
Free me of the notion that simply because I have lived a long time, I am wiser than those who have not lived so long. I am older, but not necessarily wiser!

There's a heavily liked / commented post on Facebook doing the rounds at the moment, and unfortunately it's the latest reappearance of a very old spam missive related to passport page tearing shenanigans.

Here's a shot of the post – you may well have seen this one before:

3,500+ shares, 2,300+ likes, 700+ comments. What does it say? It's a long, rambling infodump but here's the supposedly "scary" part:

PASSPORT AWARENESS AT THE AIRPORT

Please be Careful at the Airports, This is a well organized conspiracy by Immigration, Police, Customs and Airline staff with networking at all International Airports. Be careful when ever you give your passport to Immigration/Customs/Airline staff. The pass port can be easily tampered and can create trouble to you. They have found an easy way of making money. This is the way it works:

At the time of the passenger's departure, if the passenger is not looking at the officer while he is stamping the exit, the officer very cleverly tears away one of the page from the passport. When the passenger leaves the immigration counter, the case is reported on his computer terminal with full details. Now all over the country they have got full details of the passenger with Red Flag flashing on the Passport number entered by the departure immigration officer. They have made their money by doing above.

On arrival next time, he is interrogated.

Subject to the passenger's period of stay abroad, his income and standing etc., the price to get rid of the problem is settled by the Police and Immigration people. If someone argues, his future is spoiled because there are always some innocent fellows who think the honesty is the basis of getting justice.

You can see any number of versions of this floating around the web, and a (slightly) shorter version can be seen on the Snopes forum way back in 2005. To further the spread, it repeatedly asks you to send to everybody you can think of including "friends, media men and politicians". It claims there are 15 to 20 cases a month, states that the amount has increased in the last 2 to 3 years while citing no statistics and even mentions that "airline counter staff are involved in the conspiracy".

It would be a rare thing indeed to find an airport with no security cameras in place these days. Even without those, who gives a passport to an immigration officer to have it stamped and conveniently looks away at a squirrel outside for the time it would take to carefully remove a stamped page? And how would they get away with it with all those people standing around?

Did you know that some countries don't stamp passports on depature anymore? Getting a stamp isn't always guaranteed, as you can see here – and that's before we consider that the airline would know if you were on a departing plane or not. Some places put those stamps on loose bits of paper, and even when your passport is stamped things can go wrong. I once had a 59 day entry visa for a trip to the Philippines, but the immigration officer didn't read it properly and accidentally gave me a 21 day stamp. Hey, it happens and he corrected it without any problems.

You're better off checking to make sure dates are correct on entry than worrying about phantom page snatchers and mysterious airport conspiracies on exit.
