[www.keralites.net] MAHALAYA AMAVASYA TODAY

Mahalaya Amavasya
The last day of the fortnight which is sacred for offering oblations to departed ancestors, the new moon day, is considered as the most important day in the year for performing ceremonies and rites. This dark fortnight during the period September-October is known as the Mahalaya Paksha. The day of Mahalaya Amavasya is the day of great significance and importance to all Hindus. It is the annual festival for propitiating the spirits of ancestors, with prayers for peace. The fortnight preceding the new moon is specially consecrated for the propitiation of such departed spirits. The ceremonies performed in honour of ancestors during each day of this fortnight are considered to be equal to those performed at Gaya. The principle in all such rites is the worship of the departed souls and the satisfaction of their wishes so that they might be in peace during the rest of the year.
According to ancient Hindu texts, on Mahalaya Amavasya, there is a conjunction of the sun and the moon and that the sun enters the sign Virgo (Kanya). On this day, it is believed that ancestors leave their abode and come down to the world of mortals and occupy the houses of their descendants. Hindus offer oblation of water to the departed on every new-moon day. The prescribed rites are also performed every year on the death anniversary. This is the Sraddha ceremony. The special importance of these observances particularly during Mahalaya is that such ceremonies done during this fortnight have a very special effect. The offerings reach the departed souls immediately and directly, due to a boon from Lord Yama.Karna, a renowned hero according to the Mahabharata was a very generous man. After his death the great charity he had done on earth was returned to him hundred fold in heaven. However all he got was gold and silver. There was no food as he been very generous only with gold and silver during his life. He prayed to God of Death and was sent back to earth for fourteen days to make up for this.
During the fourteen days he fed the poor and offered oblations of water. On his return to the heaven he was offered food in plenty. The fourteen days are commemorated in the Mahalaya Paksha. It is believed that due to the grace of Lord Yama, it came to be so ordained that such rites done at this particular period acquired unique merits. Even those who died without progeny received these oblations given on this Pitri-paksha Amavasya day. All those who had failed to do deeds of charity and Anna-Dana (gift of food) and were thus denied these comforts in the Pitri Loka, benefited by these ceremonies.
Those deceased whose date of death is not known and whose annual Sraddha cannot be done, they also get these oblations of Pitri Paksha. Souls whose life was cut off by violent accidental or unnatural death and to whom, therefore, offerings cannot reach in the ordinary course, to them, too, the Ptripaksha offerings reach directly. Hindus now observe this Paksha with great faith and worship and charity in the form of food is considered important during this period.

[www.keralites.net] NUTRITIONAL VALUE OF CORIANDER

Nutritional Value of Coriander
Its uses in global food preparation is only the tip of the iceberg. Unbeknownst to many people, coriander is packed with potential health benefits that most people completely miss when they toss this garnish into the garbage after eating their meal. It has eleven components of essential oils, six types of acids (including ascorbic acid, better known as vitamin-C), minerals and vitamins, each having a number of beneficial properties. A more complete list is given below.
CorianderHealth benefits of coriander
Skin inflammation: Cineole, one of the 11 components of the essential oils, and linoleic acid, are both present in coriander, and they possess antirheumatic and antiarthritic properties. They help to reduce the swelling that is caused by these two conditions. For other swelling conditions, such as swelling due to kidney malfunction or anemia, it is also seen to be effective to some extent, because some of the components in coriander help the induce urination and the release of excess water from the body. The reduction in skin inflammation can lead to increased functioning, a reduction in discomfort, and an improvement in skin appearance.
Skin disorders: The disinfectant, detoxifying, antiseptic, antifungal and antioxidant properties of coriander are ideal for clearing up skin disorders such as eczema, dryness and fungal infections.
Low cholesterol levels: Some of the acids present in coriander, like linoleic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid and ascorbic acid (vitamin-C) are very effective in reducing the cholesterol levels in the blood. They also reduce the level of bad cholesterol (LDL) deposition along the inner walls of the arteries and veins, which can lead to serious cardiovascular issues like artherosclerosis, heart attacks, and strokes. More importantly, coriander helps to raise the levels of healthy cholesterol (HDL), which works as a preventative line of defense against a number of dangerous conditions.
Diarrhea: Some of the components of essential oils found in coriander such as Borneol and Linalool, aid in digestion, proper functioning of the liver and bonding of bowels, while also helping to reduce diarrhea. It is also helpful in curing diarrhea caused by microbial and fungal action, since components like Cineole, Borneol, Limonene, Alpha-pinene & beta-phelandrene have antibacterial effects.
Coriander is also increasingly popular as a means of preventing nausea, vomiting, and other stomach disorders. Its wealth of bioactive compounds means that new health benefits are always being discovered in this power-packed plant.
In addition to these health aspects of the stomach, fresh coriander leaves are excellent appetizers to get your bowels prepared for a large meal.
Blood pressure: Consuming coriander has been shown to positively reduce blood pressure in many patients suffering from hypertension. The interaction of Calcium ions and cholinergic, a neurotransmitter in the peripheral and central nervous system, more commonly know as acetylcholine. The interaction of these two elements relaxes blood vessel tension, thereby reducing the chances of a number of cardiovascular conditions, including heart attacks and strokes.
Mouth ulcers: Citronelol, a component of essential oils in coriander, is an excellent antiseptic. Additionally, other components have antimicrobial and healing effects which keep wounds and ulcers in the mouth from worsening. They help speed up the healing process of ulcers and also freshen breath. Although not in common use in mainstream products, coriander is often used as an antiseptic component of all-natural toothpastes. In fact, before the invention of toothpaste, people would chew on coriander seeds to reduce bad breath!
Anemia: Coriander is high in iron content, which directly helps people who suffer from anemia. Low iron content in the blood can result in shortness of breath, heart palpitations, extreme fatigue, and a decrease in cognitive functions. Iron also benefits proper functions of other organ systems, increases energy and strength, and promotes the health of bones.
Anti-allergic properties: Multiple studies have shown coriander to have strong anti-histamine properties that can reduce the uncomfortable affects of seasonal allergies and hay fever (rhinitis). Coriander oil can also be used to reduce allergic reactions to contact with plants, insects, food, and other substances that may cause allergic reactions on the skin or when consumed. Internally, it can ward off anaphylaxis, hives, and dangerous swelling of the throat and glands. It's never a bad idea to protect yourself against allergic reactions, especially since it is difficult to know what you might be allergic to, until you come in contact with it for the first time!

Salmonella protection: Salmonella is one of the most dangerous causes of food borne illnesses in the world, so any natural way to protect against it is very important. Coriander has unusually high levels of dodecenal, a natural compound that is actually twice as powerful of an antibiotic than the leading treatment for salmonella-based illness. By adding coriander into your normal diet, you protect your body from horribly uncomfortable, and even fatal, illnesses relating to this deadly bacteria. Coriander is commonly found in salsa to add flavor, so dip a chip and protect yourself from food poisoning, the most common way of describing the effects of salmonella.
Bone health: As a rich source of calcium, coriander is of great value for people who want to protect the integrity of their bones. Calcium and other essential minerals found in coriander are integral components of bone regrowth and durability, as well as in the prevention of bone degradation so commonly associated with debilitating diseases like osteoporosis. Adding even a small amount of coriander to your diet can help to keep your bones healthy and strong for years to come. Calcium is particularly present in the center leaves of coriander, so aim for that part of the plant if bone health is your focus!
Digestion: Coriander, due to the rich aroma from its essential oils, helps in the proper secretion of enzymes and digestive juices in the stomach, thereby stimulating digestion and peristaltic motion. It is also helpful in treating eating disorders like anorexia. Besides the pleasant aroma of coriander, it has certain stimulatory qualities, derived from the minerals and neurotransmitters that are stimulated when coriander is ingested. Studies have shown that dyspepsia (indigestion) is reduced if coriander is regularly added to the diet. For small children, who have a higher chance of developing abdominal colic than adults, small amounts of coriander in their diet can clear the issue up quickly!
Smallpox: The essential oils in coriander are rich in antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-infectious and detoxifying components and acids. The presence of vitamin-C and iron strengthens the immune system as well. These properties help prevent and cure smallpox, and they can also reduce the pain and have a soothing effect on smallpox patients. In the places left in the world where smallpox outbreaks occur, studies have shown massive amounts of vitamin-C have a definite curative effect on smallpox in hundreds of different cases.
Menstrual disorders: Coriander is a natural stimulant, and it regulates proper secretion from the endocrine glands, and that hormonal impact means that it helps regulate proper menstrual cycles and reduces the associated pain during a woman's period.
Eye care: Coriander is loaded with antioxidants, vitamin-A, vitamin-C and minerals like phosphorous in its essential oils, which prevents vision disorders, macular degeneration and it reduces strain and stress on the eyes. There is also beta-carotene in the leaves, which prevent a number of other diseases that affect the eye, and can even reverse the effects of vision degradation in aging patients.
Conjunctivitis: As discussed earlier, coriander is a very good disinfectant and has antimicrobial properties that protect the eyes from contagious diseases like conjunctivitis. Coriander oil is one of the fundamental components of a number of eye care products.
CorianderBlood sugar and diabetes: Due the stimulating effect of coriander on the endocrine glands, the secretion of insulin is increased from pancreas which subsequently increases the insulin level in the blood. This regulates the proper assimilation and absorption of sugar and the resulting drops in the sugar level in the blood. This property is extremely beneficial for patients who suffer from diabetes and other related conditions, in order to lower their chances of dangerous spikes and drops in their blood sugar levels, and to ensure other normal metabolic functions as well.
Other benefits: Coriander helps cure ulcers, inflammation, spasms, while acting as an expectorant and protecting the liver. It is anticarcinogenic, anticonvulsant, antihistaminic and hypnotic. Coriander is believed to be a natural aphrodisiac and traditionally, it was widely used in certain combinations with other herbs to enhance a person's libido.
Word of Caution: There have been very few dangers associated with coriander, but as with almost any food, there is some danger of allergic reaction to it, and in some cases, it can be irritating to the skin. One of the more unusual side effects is that some patients complain of sunlight sensitivity, and that excessive coriander intake makes them more susceptible to sunburn, which could subsequently lead to skin cancer over the long term.
Pregnant women should not take coriander until more established research is done, although some women have claimed that it increases their production of breast milk flow. It is best to be safe, so speak with a doctor before adding coriander to your diet, and pay attention to the response your body has!

Subject: SIX REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD EAT FAT

SIX REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD EAT FAT
Dr Mark Hyman
Think fatty foods only contribute to a pleasantly plump body? A new book debunks this popular myth and tells you why you should be enjoying your olive oil and meat
Weight loss from eating good fats? Check.
Heart disease preven tion? Check. Revved metabolism? Check. But the health benefits from eating more of the right fats don't end there! Here's a look at all the other good things healthy fats can do for your body, your brain, your mood, and more...
EATING FAT PREVENTS BRAIN AGING AND DEMENTIA
Low-fat diets have been associated with dementia and higher-fat diets shown to prevent it. In fact, leading Alzheimer's researchers are promoting a very high-fat (or ketogenic) diet for the treatment of dementia. In his paper Reversal of Cognitive Decline: A Novel Therapeutic Program Dr Dale Bredesen, of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, reviews ten case studies where dementia was actually reversed in patients on a very lowcarb, low glycemic, lowgrain, high-fat diet. This is ground breaking. After $2 billion of research and 243 studies over the last few decades on the treatment of dementia with medication, none have shown this level of success. In fact, none of those studies worked except for one, and that one only very slightly. In Dr David Perlmutter's ground breaking book Grain Brain, he also documents the role of fat in the brain. There is an abundance of research showing that carbs cause brain aging and fat prevents it. In fact, some now call Alzheimer's type 3 diabetes because insulin resistance causes brain damage. A study from the Mayo Clinic found that people who eat a ton of carbs quadruple their risk of getting predementia, known as mild cognitive impairment. The same study showed that people who ate the healthiest fats had a 44 per cent lower risk of early dementia, and those who ate more good quality protein from chicken, meat, and fish had a 21 per cent lower risk of early dementia. Another study of more than 8,000 people over the age of sixty-five found that 280 of them got dementia over the span of four years. The researchers looked at the participants' diets and found that those who ate the least brainhealthy omega-3 fats had a 37 per cent increased risk of dementia. Those who ate the most fish had a 44 per cent reduction in the risk of getting dementia. Those who ate the most olive oil, walnuts, and flaxseeds had a 60 per cent reduction in the risk of getting dementia. But they also found that those who ate the most omega-6 oils had twice the risk of dementia.
EATING FAT HELPS WITH SEIZURES, DEPRESSION, ADD, AUTISM, TRAUMA, AND MORE
Your brain is 60 per cent fat, and much of it is made of omega-3 fats and cholesterol.
When you eat a lowfat diet, you are starving your brain.
Fat is critical for your brain. Lack of fat in the diet has been linked to neurodegenerative diseases; mental disorders such as depression, suicide, and aggressive behaviour; ADD and autism; stroke; and trauma. On the other hand, supplementing the diet with omega-3 and other good fats has been linked to improvement in all these conditions. Omega-3 fatty acids stimulate beneficial gene expression and boost the activity of your brain cells, increase connections between brain cells, and even help the formation of new brain cells (neurogenesis). They help reduce brain inflammation and improve cognitive function. They can aid depression and even recovery from brain injury. Very high-fat ketogenic diets are used to control epilepsy and are now being used for ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and other neurologic disorders, including brain cancer. Bottom line: Fat is good for your brain!
EATING FAT REDUCES INFLAMMATION AND AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE
Bad fats such as the omega-6 refined vegetable oils cause inflammation, but good fats reduce inflammation. Omega-3 fats have been extensively studied as a way of treating inflammatory and autoimmune disease.
They modulate inflammatory pathways and help improve expression of anti-inflammatory genes. There have been many studies assessing the benefits of supplementation with fish oil in inflammatory and autoimmune diseases in humans, including rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis, lupus erythemato sus, multiple sclerosis, and migraine headaches.
These studies show great benefits, including decreased disease activity and less of a need for anti-inflammatory drugs. I have found that fish oil supplementation along with a lowglycemic, anti-inflammatory, higher-fat diet that is also gluten -and dairy-free can dramatically help my patients with autoimmune disease. Gamma linolenic acid (GLA) has been well researched in autoimmune disease and shown to be effective. It is found in evening primrose oil or borage oil and can be synthesized by the body, but often not very well, especially under conditions of illness. I have used it effectively in combination with diet and other therapies in many of my autoimmune patients.
EATING FAT BOOSTS YOUR SPORTS PERFORMANCE
We have all been trained to believe that if you want to enhance your sports performance, you need to carb-load. Eat that big bowl of pasta before a race to make sure you top up your muscle arbohydrate stores (glycogen) so you don't hit the wall . . . that sort of thing. You can store up to 2,000 calories of carbs as glycogen in your muscles, but the average lean athlete has about 40,000 calories of energy stored as fat. Wouldn't it be great if you could switch from carb burning to fat burning? Many scientists have studied high-fat, low-carb diets for athletes. Two in particular have led the way: Dr Jeff Volek and Dr Stephen Phinney. They have authored hun dreds of papers untangling the biology of highfat, low-carb diets on every aspect of physiology -even in extreme athletes who are insulin sensitive and not carbohydrate intolerant. In their books The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living and The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance, they go into great detail on how your body can switch from burning mostly carbs to burning mostly fat. This is called keto-adaptation. The key is to keep insulin levels very low. Higher levels of insulin inhibit or block fat burning, making it impossible to mobilize fat stored in your tissues. Drs Volek and Phinney explain the benefits of switching from carb burning to fat burning for exercise:
1
Low-carb( highfat) diets are antiinflammatory and so reduce oxidative stress during exercise, reduce lactic acid buildup, and help the body recover faster between exercise sessions.
2
Once you adapt to a low-carb diet (which takes about two weeks), your body relies primarily on burning body fat during and between exercise sessions, so you don't have to load up on carbs to restore glycogen levels. You can eat a lot of fat without risk.
3
Endurance and power -or strength training athletes can use carb-restricted high-fat diets and even get better body composition and strength.
I know eating a low-carb, high-fat diet has made me stronger, fitter, and faster even as I've aged. And when I load up on coconut oil, which contains medium-chain triglycerides, which boost performance, increase fat burning, and help build muscle, before a long bike ride, I can go and go without pooping out.
EATING FAT GIVES YOU BEAUTIFUL SKIN, HAIR, AND NAILS
Ever wonder how trainers get horses to have beautiful, shiny coats? They give them flaxseeds, which are a rich source of omega-3 fats. Lack of omega-3 fat in your diet from fish or plant sources can cause significant health problems. Most people slather creams, lotions, and potions on dry skin, put on all sorts of hair products to bring their hair back to life, and use nail products to strengthen their nails, but most of our outside problems come from inside. Omega-3 deficiency can cause dry, itchy, flaky, even discolored skin. It can also cause rough, bumpy chicken skin on the backs of your arms. I know you are checking that now! Your fin gertips may crack and peel. Your hair may be dry, stiff, and tan gled; you may have dandruff and hair loss.
Your finger nails might grow slowly or become brittle and chipped.Omega-3 fats can relieve all of these problems. For some people with really problematic skin, applying a combination of flax and borage oil can have amazing results.
EATING FAT ENHANCES YOUR SEX LIFE
You might be surprised to learn that your sex hormones are produced from cholesterol in the body. We eat an average of 146 pounds of flour and 152 pounds of sugar per person per year in America, which spikes insulin, driving the storage of belly fat, increasing estrogen in men (belly fat cells produce more estrogen) and sending their testosterone levels plummeting. This leads to low sex drive, sexual dysfunction, muscle loss, loss of body hair, and man boobs! For most men, cutting out the carbs and boosting fats fixes the problem without having to resort to hormone replacement. Low-fat diets can cause women to stop menstruating or to experience irregular, heavy periods and infertility. They can increase belly fat, raise testosterone levels, and trigger acne, facial hair, and hair loss on the head, whereas highfat, lowcarb diets can reverse all that.

Touch healer Dr. Shashikant Seth back

Dr. Shashikant Seth, the touch healer from Bombay, India, is back in Sri Lanka to conduct his programme of healing and training. His wife is also with him on this visit to assist him.

"Bypass the bypass surgery", says Dr. Seth who claims that a decoction of dried pomegranate seeds in lukewarm water worked wonders for many of his patients suffering from angina. The success of this experiment Dr. Seth says encouraged him to try the decoction on patients waiting for bypass surgery, and these patients too experienced relief in all symptoms.

"In one case of coronary arterial blockage, the patient started using half a glass of fresh pomegranate juice daily for a whole year. It completely reversed the plaque build-up and unblocked the arteries to normal levels." Dr. Seth also claims to have a special home remedy for Diabetes, which is another decoction with the addition of Jeevan Pravan oil which he supplies. In addition to these treatments, Dr. Seth practises touch healing, naturopathy for physical and emotional problems. A training course for touch healing is also being conducted.
