[www.keralites.net] The Whisper (Story)

The Whisper Recently, I heard a touching story which illustrates the power that words have to change a life -- a power that lies right in the hands of those reading this article. Mary was born with a cleft palate (see the pictures) and had to bear the jokes and stares of cruel children who teased her non-stop about her misshaped lip, crooked nose, and garbled speech. With all the teasing, Mary grew up hating the fact that she was "different". She was convinced that no one, outside her family, could ever love her ... until she entered Mrs. Leonard's class.

Mrs. Leonard had a warm smile, a round face, and shiny brown hair. While everyone in her class liked her, Mary came to love Mrs. Leonard. In the 1950's, it was common for teachers to give their children an annual hearing test. However, in Mary's case, in addition to her cleft palate, she was barely able to hear out of one ear. Determined not to let the other children have another "difference" to point out, she would cheat on the test each year. The "whisper test" was given by having a child walk to the classroom door, turn sideways, close one ear with a finger, and then repeat something which the teacher whispered. Mary turned her bad ear towards her teacher and pretended to cover her good ear. She knew that teachers would often say things like, "The sky is blue," or "What color are your shoes?" But not on that day. Surely, God put seven words in Mrs. Leonard's mouth that changed Mary's life forever. When the "Whisper test" came, Mary heard the words: "I wish you were my little daughter."

Dads, I wish there was some way that I could communicate to you the incredible blessing which affirming words impart to children. I wish, too, that you could sit in my office, when I coun- sel, and hear the terrible damage that individuals received from not hearing affirming words--particularly affirming words from a father. While words from a godly teacher can melt a heart, words from a father can powerfully set the course of a life.

If affirming words were something rarely spoken in your home growing up, let me give you some tips on words and phrases that can brighten your own child's eyes and life. These words are easy to say to any child who comes into your life

I'm proud of you,
Way to go,
Bingo ... you did it,
Magnificent, I knew you could do it,
What a good helper,
You're very special to me,
I trust you,
What a treasure,
Hurray for you,

Beautiful work,
You're a real trooper,
Well done,

That's so creative,
You make my day,
You're a joy,

Give me a big hug,
You're such a good listener,
You figured it out,
I love you,
You're so responsible,

You remembered,
You're the best,
You sure tried hard,
I've got to hand it to you,
I couldn't be prouder of you,
You light up my day,
I'm praying for you,
You're wonderful,
I'm behind you,
You're so kind to your (brother/sister),
You're God's special gift,
I'm here for you.

Peanut butter is an ideal food for a weight-gain diet.
If you are below a healthy weight, putting on pounds can prove difficult. A common -- and wise -- tip for gaining weight is to eat calorie-dense foods that provide a large amount of nutrients in small servings. At 90 calories per tablespoon, peanut butter is an ideal candidate. To gain weight with peanut butter, look for every opportunity to fit it into your diet.

The Most Important Medical Test.
Dr. Sudhir V. Shah M.D., D.M. (Neurology) Consultant Neurologist, Prof. And HOD, Neurology, V.S.G.Hospital, Ahmedabad. Director of Neurosciences, Sterling Hospital, Ahmedabad.http://www.sudhirneuro.org/
Recently I spoke at a health conference. There was one general reaction that came through loud and clear: surprise. You see, I talked about the number that is THE most telling indicator about your state of health and is arguably the most importantnumberto pay attention to if you want a life free of pain, inflammation and disease.
It's not yourweight. Or BMI. Orcholesterol. Or your triglycerides. It's not even yourblood pressure
It's yourpH(pHfactor indicates acidic versus alkaline ratio in your body)
In a flashback to high school chemistry, remember that thepHscale goes from 0 to 14.0is pure acid,7is neutral, and14is pure alkaline. You came into this world with an alkalinepH. It's how your body was designed and how you're meant to stay. Without exception, ALL of your organs, tissues, bones and joints work best when your bloodpHis slightly alkaline (around7.365).
If yourpHis even just a little too acidic, that's when your body can begin to literally break down. Aches and pains begin to creep up. Tumours (including cancer) can flourish. Diseases can rear their ugly heads.
Although a number of factors can contribute to an acidpH, (including stress, environmental toxins, lack of exercise and smoking), far and away the number one factor is your FOOD.
Eating acid-creating foods (especially fast food, processed food, meat, dairy, refined carbs and hard to digest meal combinations) pullsyourpHdown toward the acid range.
On the other hand, when your diet contains many alkaline foods (like fresh fruits and vegetables) and is easy for your body to break down, you encourage a more alkalinepH.
Let's take a look at some examples of how your body can break down when you'reacidic:
Your heart pumps an unbelievable 13,000 quarts of blood a day--enough to fill a small swimming pool. If there are toxins in yourblood, that puts a huge strain on your heart to do its job. Acid wastes in your system also rob your blood of oxygen, which causes your heart tissue to deteriorate.
Yourliver serves over 300 different functions-with two of the most important being to remove acid wastes from your blood and make alkaline enzymes for your body. If you're like most people who live in industrialised countries, your blood resembles a war zone with far too many toxins floating around, and your liver is constantly being stressed cleaning them out. If that goes on long enough, it can completely shut down.
Yourpancreas is super important. In fact, it's responsible for completing digestion in your small intestine. And it helps regulate blood sugar by producing insulin. Like I said, super important. More so than any other organ, the pancreas is extremely sensitive to yourpHand absolutely CANNOT function when you're acidic -- it MUST have an alkaline environment. If your pancreas is not working right, you can be looking at type II diabetes
Yourkidneys create urine and help get rid of excess acid from the body. About one litre of blood passes through them every single minute. Ifyour blood has too much acid and toxins, your kidneys are over-stressed and unable to do their job.
Yourstomach properly breaks down your food, the small intestine can finish the job and digestion is completed like it should be. Butfoods that are acid-creating are hard for your stomach to break down, and in its efforts to do its job, it may overproduce acid. The result can be poorly digested food, fewer nutrients being absorbed, and acid rising up into your throat. Acid reflux, GERD, IBS, hiatal hernia and gastritis are all on the rise and this is why. The typical American diet is LOADED with hard to digest, acid-creating food.
Your colon: Wastes are supposed to easily pass through the colon and "out your back door." But if digestion has not been accomplished properly, they don't move through like they should. Instead they can clog your colon walls, become a breeding ground for bacteria and disease and cause you to put on weight. Plus, the toxins can be reabsorbed into your bloodstream, make you ill and encourage the development of food sensitivities. It's no surprise that colon cancer is the number one cancer killer, and that so many people suffer with IBS, diverticulosis/itis and chronic constipation
So how do we get this magic 7.365pH?
Here are the 4 steps to attaining and maintaining an optimal alkalinepH:
Step 1
Check yourpHat regular intervals
You can get a saliva test or urine test kit at most drug stores or health food stores. The saliva test is the least accurate and urine is slightly more accurate. You can also have your blood tested by a doctor. This is the most accurate measure but also the most expensive. If you want this done and your doctor won't do it, find one who will. The normalpHfor urine is about 6.5-6.8 (it's acidic because urine is an exit for toxins), for saliva 7.0-7.4 and for blood 7.365 is your target. If you're testing yourpHwith saliva or urine, it's important to perform the test several times at different times of the day, sincepHcan be affected by what you eat or drink.
Step 2
Drink pure water
Aim for at least 5-8 glasses per day. Stir in a little fresh-squeezed lemon juice to make it more alkaline if
you'd like. Alkalizing drops are also available at health food stores. Water means water and does not mean coffee, tea, Gatorade, soda or other sweetened drinks. But avoid drinking tap water as it can contain chlorine and/or fluoride. Strive to drink filtered or bottled water.
Step 3
Eat more alkaline foods
The important thing to note here is you CAN continue to eat some "good" acid foods that have valid nutrients - so if you don't want to give up that juicy steak you love or that roasted chicken, you don't have to. Just make sure that those acid foods are counterbalanced by a good portion of alkaline foods. 50/50 is a good place to start, and the more alkaline, the better. "Good" acid foods include nourishing things like:
*Eggs,
*Fish
*Brown rice
*Yogurt
*Chicken
*turkey
*Beef(preferably grass fed and organic).
These foods have nutrients that do benefit your body. So it's not necessary to eliminate them. You just need to make sure to keep them under control, and make sure they represent no more than 50% of your calories.
And remember it's NEVER a good idea to eat processed food, fast food or drink soda. Keep those to a bare minimum or preferably none at all.
Step 4
Keep your digestion efficient
In order to keep your digestion humming, it's vital to eat meal combinations that are easily broken down and don't cause your stomach to over produce acid, and make sure you have adequate enzymes to do the job.
Simply put:
Easy digestion=proper elimination of wastes=a more alkalinepH
Poor digestion =acid waste build-up=Sickness and a more acidpH
Without the proper enzymes for digestion, you can suffer fromgas, bloating, constipation, waste build-up, and you'll have a more acidicpH
So remember, while your weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. are all very important too, it's vital to keep your eye on theMOSTimportant number--yourpH.
Do that and your body will thank you many times over.

[www.keralites.net] HYPERTENSION

Hypertension is another name for high blood pressure. It might seem confusing at first, but this condition is relatively easy to treat and highly manageable. This article will explain what the condition is, look at some of the associated lifestyle factors and then describe the treatments available.
What is Blood Pressure?
As blood flows through your body, it applies pressure to your artery walls. When the pressure is too high, the heart has to work harder and your arteries can become damaged. This condition usually becomes more common as you age.
Symptoms
Many people don't even know they have high blood pressure because there are no outward symptoms. If untreated this condition can quietly damage the heart, lungs, blood vessels, brain, and kidneys, earning the condition the name "silent killer". When you have high blood pressure the risk for heart disease, kidney disease, and stroke increase.
How to tell if you have high blood pressure
The best way to know if you you are at risk is by having your blood pressure read. The normal rate is 120/80. The top rate is called the systolic pressure and measures the pressure when your heart beats. The lower number is called the diastolic pressure, and this measures the pressure between heartbeats when your heart refills with blood.
Hypertension has no known cause. People with hypertension have a reading that averages 140/90 or higher. If your reading is between 120-139 and 80-89, for systolic and diastolic pressure respectively, you might have a condition called prehypertension. This range increases your risk of developing heart disease. To lower your reading doctors will recommend lifestyle changes.
People with a reading of 180/110 or higher may have hypertensive crisis and might experience anxiety, nosebleeds, shortness of breath and a severe headache. This condition can lead to a stroke, heart attack, kidney damage, or loss of consciousness. Seek medical attention.
Hypertension affects more men and women equally as they age. Men are more likely to develop hypertension before the age of 45, and more women will develop hypertension by the time they are 65. Your risk for hypertension is higher if you have a family member who has high blood pressure, or if you have diabetes.
Risk Factors
Sodium: Found in salt, sodium causes the body to retain fluid, and can put a strain on the heart, leading to increased blood pressure. Processed foods such as canned soups and cold cuts contain a lot of sodium. The American Heart Association advises eating less than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day.
Stress: While stress can make your blood pressure go up, there's no evidence that it relates to blood pressure as a chronic condition. Stress, however, may indirectly cause hypertension because it increases the risk for heart disease. Stress is also likely to lead to other unhealthy habits like poor diet, smoking, or drinking alcohol.
Weight: When you are overweight or carry a few extra pounds, you strain your heart more and this increases your risk for hypertension. Customized diets for lowering blood pressure often involve limiting calorie intake, reducing fatty foods and added sugars, while increasing lean protein, fiber, fruits, and vegetables.
Alcohol: Drinking alcoholic beverages can also increase blood pressure. The American Heart Association recommends that men limit their drinks to 2 drinks* per day, while women reduce it to one.
*definition of a drink: a 12 oz. Beer (355 ml), a 4 oz. Glass of wine (118ml), a 1.5 oz. of 80-proof spirits (44ml of 40% alcohol), and 1 oz. Of 100-proof spirits (30ml of 50% alcohol).
Caffeine: This has a temporary effect on blood pressure and studies have not found a link between hypertension and caffeine. Regardless, the America Heart Association recommends only one or two cups a day.
Medications: Several medications can cause blood pressure to rise, such as decongestants, steroids, birth control, NSAID pain killers, and certain anti-depressants.

Treatments
Diet: There are several ways to lower blood pressure. A change in diet is one such way. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension or DASH diet was designed to do so. It focuses on increasing fruits, vegetables, whole-grain foods, low-fat dairy, fish, poultry, and nuts consumed and avoiding red meats, saturated fats, and sugars.
Exercise: Another way to combat high blood pressure is through exercise. Doctors advise at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per week and at least two muscle strengthening activities per week. Activities such as brisk walking, gardening, cycling and aerobic classes are recommended.
Diuretics: An alternative way to lower blood pressure are through diuretics, also called water pills. These help the body get rid of excess water and sodium. The side effect of these is that you will be urinating more than usual.
Beta-blockers: A way to help slow down your heart beat, beta-blockers can help with hypertension by easing your heart's heavy workload. This is often a treatment for arrhythmia, which is an abnormal heart rate. This treatment for hypertension is often prescribed along with other medications.
Side effects: insomnia, dizziness, fatigue, cold hands and feet, and erectile dysfunction
ACE Inhibitors and Angiotension Receptor Blockers:
Taking ACE inhibitors (angiotensin - converting - enzyme) can give your heart an easier time because they reduce the body's supply of angiotensin II. This is a chemical that causes your blood vessels to contract and narrow. With less angiotensin II, you will have more relaxed and open arteries, thus reducing your blood pressure rate. Similarly, you can take pills to block the receptors for angiotensin II. These pills can take several weeks to be effective.
Side effects of ACE inhibitors: dry cough, skin rash, or dizziness, and high levels of potassium.
Side effects of Angiotensin II block receptors: dizziness, muscle cramps, insomnia, and high levels of potassium.
Calcium Channel Blockers: Another part of the body, you could block to fight hypertension is your calcium channel. Calcium causes your heart to contract strongly. Blockers slow the movement of calcium in your blood vessels and heart cells, resulting in your heart being contracted more gently and more relaxed blood. These pills need to be taken with milk or food, and you should avoid alcohol and grapefruit juice because they have possible interactions.
Calcium channel blockers side effects: dizziness, heart palpitations, swelling of the ankles, and constipation.
Medications and Complementary Therapies: Your doctor might suggest other blood pressure medications such as vasodilators, alpha blockers, and central agonists. Along with lifestyle changes, doctors also might recommend complementary therapies such as meditation, yoga, tai chi and deep breathing. These relaxation techniques can allow your body to enter a state of deep rest, and lower blood pressure. Herbal therapies are not recommended because they often interfere with blood pressure medication.
