[www.keralites.net] 13 House Hold Products you should never Mix

13 Household Products You Should Never Mix
More accidents happen at home than anywhere else. Many of these can be avoided by just knowing what not to do. If you avoid these 13 combinations, you'll save yourself time and money, and maybe even a trip to the hospital.
1. Different battery brands
Mixing batteries from different brands can lead to them leaking battery acid. The reason is that manufacturers use different chemical compositions for their batteries, which produce different levels of current. When one runs out of juice, the other can still keep running, but that causes it to leak, which can damage electronic devices.
2. Rubbing alcohol & bleach
Rubbing alcohol contains ethanol or isopropyl alcohol, which, when mixed with household bleach that contains sodium hypochlorite, will create chloroform and hydrochloric acid, as well as chloroacetone or dichloroacetone. These compounds can cause damage to the nervous system, lungs, kidneys, liver, eyes and skin. Also, high levels of chloroform can lead to dizziness, nausea, loss of consciousness and even death.
3. Ammonia & bleach
This combination is also very dangerous, producing vapors that can cause severe damage to your respiratory system. And that's not the worst thing that can happen – if there are large amounts of ammonia, you might create a substance called liquid hydrazine. Liquid hydrazine is highly toxic and potentially explosive.
4. Vinegar & bleach
If you add a weak acid to bleach, it creates vapors of toxic chloramine and chlorine. These vapors can cause serious chemical burns to your eyes and lungs.
5. Vinegar & baking soda
Vinegar is an acid and baking soda is a base – those two cancel each other out, rendering the resulting solution useless.
6. Vinegar & hydrogen peroxide
Combining these two products in the same container will create a corrosive peracetic acid. In high enough concentrations, peracetic acid can irritate and even damage your skin, eyes, throat, nose and lungs.
7. Grapefruit & certain medicines
Compounds in the grapefruit interfere with enzymes in the stomach, which are in charge of metabolizing certain types of medicine. This ends up increasing the level of certain chemicals in the blood and can lead to a deadly overdose.
8. Alcohol & ibuprofen
Taking ibuprofen on an empty stomach can damage the stomach-lining. Adding alcohol into the mix stimulates this process and can worsen the effect. Damage to the lining can lead to internal bleeding, ulcers and other stomach problems.
9. Alcohol & acetaminophen
Chronic consumption of alcohol causes the body to produce certain enzymes that adversely interact with acetaminophen. The reaction can damage the liver and even be lethal. In the U.S. alone, over 200 people die every year due to this deadly combination.
10. Dairy & antibiotics
Dairy is rich in calcium, and while it may be good for your bones, its interaction with antibiotics is anything but. Calcium prevents the antibiotics from being absorbed into your body, reducing their effectiveness.
Antibiotics that are most affected by dairy are: Ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin and tetracycline.
11. Milk & energy drinks
The acid in energy drinks mixes with proteins in the milk, causing the milk to curdle very quickly. The result is usually projectile vomiting…
12. Retinol & glycolic acid or alpha hydroxyl acid
Both of these skin-care products may help you look younger, but mixing them together is a bad idea. Glycolic acid has a different level of pH than retinol, so when both are used, the glycolic acid becomes dominant, reducing the effectiveness of retinol considerably. It can also cause some skin irritation.
13. Retinol & sunlight
Recent evidence shows that retinol can become toxic when exposed to direct sunlight, and increase your chances of getting a sunburn. It is recommended that you only use it at night, or if you choose to use it during the day – use sunscreen and avoid direct sunlight as much as possible.

[www.keralites.net] MEDICINE & CHEMOTHERAPY SIDE EFFECTS

Medicine and Chemotherapy Side Effects
Preparing for Chemotherapy

Many of the deficiencies and side effects created by chemotherapy can be avoided and counteracted with a little forethought and preparation. Fortifying your body as much as possible in the weeks or, if possible, months prior to beg
Natural
inning therapy may increase your ability to deal with some of the more uncomfortable side effects. Preparing for your therapy also gives you more control over the therapeutic process, and this can alleviate much of the anxiety and emotional stress often generated by cancer treatment.
Here are 3 things you can do to prepare for chemotherapy:
Prepare emotionally
Get plenty of sleep
Take care of your gastrointestinal health
Prepare Emotionally for Chemotherapy
First, confront and understand any fears you may have about "chemotherapy sickness". In fact, many people experience very little discomfort and are able to continue work and family activities with little disruption. Anxiety often disrupts patients' lives more than the actual treatment. Anxiety and stress also may make it more difficult to recover.
Remember to relax. Many people rush around before treatment begins, exhausting themselves, trying to prepare everything and everyone, anticipating that they will be too sick to do anything during treatment. Let friends and family pick up the slack. This is your special time to focus on yourself and your healing.
Get Plenty of Sleep during Chemotherapy
Make sure you are getting enough sleep. Anticipation, worry, and fear can interfere with sleep, making it difficult to fall or stay asleep. There are several non-toxic herbal and homeopathic sleep aids, as well as nutritional supplements, that can help relieve insomnia.
Non-toxic, herbal sleep aids:
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis): standardized extract 0.8% valerenic acid; 150–300mg
Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata): standardized extract 2.6% flavinoids; 300–450mg
Skullcap (Scutellaria laterifolia): 1 tsp dried herb in 1-cup hot water; drink in the evening to calm the nervous system
Kava (Piper methysticum): 50mg standardized extract to reduce anxiety that may inhibit the ability to fall asleep
Homeopathic sleep aids:
There are several over-the-counter formulas, which may promote a restful night sleep when used as directed, including:
"Calms Forte" by Hyland Homeopathics
"Calm Formula" by Boericke
"Insomnia Formula" by Hyland Homeopathics
Nutrient supplements that can aid sleep:
The following supplements also may be taken:
5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP): 100–300mg with fruit juice or other carbohydrate (e.g. crackers, soy milk); this amino acid precursor to seritonin supports seritonin production in the brain and may improve sleep
Magnesium citrate: 250mg
Flax seed oil: 1 Tbs daily; this essential fatty acid tonifies (strengthens and supports) the nervous system
Take Care of Your Gastrointestinal Health during Chemotherapy
Clear up any chronic intestinal candida or parasite infection. Chronic gastrointestinal problems can severely impact overall health and affect recovery from chemotherapy.
Consult a naturopathic physician or holistic medical doctor to treat chronic gastrointestinal problems. The following nutritional supplements can help build and protect gastrointestinal tissues and enable the body's nutrients stores to rebound from the toxic chemotherapies:
Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum): This herb may help protect the liver from toxins associated with chemotherapy, improving nausea, lack of appetite, fatigue, and flu-like achiness; 250 mg standardized extract, 3 times a day.
Glutamine: This is an amino acid that is the preferred fuel for the upper gastrointestinal tissues. It helps prevent stomatitis (inflammation of the stomach) an can significantly reduce nausea associated with chemotherapy; 500mg, 3 times a day.
Vitamin K: Most forms of vitamin K are derived from bacteria in the intestines. The intestinal bacteria balance is severely disrupted during chemotherapy treatment, and vitamin K deficiencies can create problems with blood clotting and bruising; 500–1000mcg, daily.
Antioxidants: Taking an ACES (Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and selenium) antioxidant supplement just prior to and during therapy may decrease the toxicity of chemotherapy and increase its effectiveness; (Vitamin A: 25,000 IU daily; Vitamin C: 1000 mg 3x a day with meals; Vitamin E: 400 IU 1–2x a day; selenium: 200 mcg daily).
Whole foods diet : Increase your nutrient foundation base by focusing your diet on fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grains, and low fat proteins (e.g., fish, white meat poultry, soy).
Increase Fiber: Flax seed meal has several beneficial properties that can support your digestive system before, during, and after your chemotherapy treatment. It is a mucilaginous fiber, meaning it turns into a soothing protective gel in your digestive tract and, because it is high in Omega 3 oils, can help reduce inflammation along the way. It is also a phytoestrogenic herb that has a mildly adaptagenic effect (inhibits when there is hormone excess, and stimulates when there is a deficiency) at your hormone receptors. This will not impact you negatively if you don't need hormonal support but can work like soy products if estrogen production (too much or too little) is a medical issue for you.
Build up protein: A daily smoothie with fresh or frozen fruit (blueberries, strawberries, etc.), protein powder, and flax meal is a good source of fiber and protein and fruit-derived bioflavinoids; 15–22 gm protein powder per serving.
Drink plenty of fresh, pure water: 2–3 liters daily.
Regular exercise: Under the supervision of a physician, to increase energy and vitality, and improve circulation and waste product removal.

[www.keralites.net] Indian wars

Well written book - complete account of all the wars right from 1947, 570 pages, If you get an opportunity you must read.  (  In any case we know all facts, brilliantly written logically, well summarized below.)

But then also read Operation Blue Star by KS Brar, a detailed account of the fiasco in June, 1984. Same leaders, and similar military command structure sitting in Amritsar. Similar bureaucracy, same Prime Minister, and also the other ministers. The only difference - General Shubeg was on the other side. The critical decisions were taken by the entire military command sitting in Amritsar.

Then go and read books on the sikh riots in Delhi in the next few months- the only difference - PM was different with very little experience. All other players were the same, when we killed, or allowed to be killed 3000 sikhs - a race that had protected Hindus over centuries - particularly its Gurus. Another fiasco.

We should not also forget a similar 'operation' perhaps conducted by KPS Gill in the golden temple, with no damages.

Someone should write a book on the first and last brilliant operation, with two intermediate fiascos, and examine the structures and the men in command, who made these possible.

If no one does, I will attempt - an absolute layman on these issues.

Brilliant commanders and brave men won India the 1971 War

May 17, 2016 12:27 IST

Air Vice Marshal Arjun Subramaniam's new book India's Wars: A Military History, 1947-1971, which was released in New Delhi on Monday, May 16, gives the reader deep insights into the sharp military minds that shaped battlefield tactics and the precision with which they were executed.

Here, Air Vice Marshal Subramaniam describes how the 1971 war reaffirmed the importance of inspirational senior leadership in battle and heralded the emergence of a new fighting class amongst younger officers and men of India's armed forces.
Published with the author's kind and gracious permission.

The seriousness with which the Indian Navy went about operationalising its new missile boats was reflected in the audacious manner in which they were used during the war. A holistic and integrated approach to preparing for war paid rich dividends for India.

Deception was executed successfully as a mission of war by concealing the presence of the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant as it lay in wait in the Andamans.

Another instance of effective deception by the Indian Navy was seen during the missile attacks on Karachi wherein the crew of the missile boats communicated with each other in Russian, baffling the Pakistanis.

With the Indian Navy's Carrier Battle Group performing well in the Bay of Bengal, concepts of 'sea control' took seed in the Indian Navy as it sought to build significant asymmetry vis-a-vis the Pakistan navy.

Indigenisation of warship design commenced in right earnest after the 1971 war and would pay rich dividends in the years to come. The Pakistan navy, on the other hand, failed to put together an offensive naval strategy, preferring instead to rely on the deterrent capabilities of its submarine fleet.

Fun & Info @ Keralites.netOne of the biggest strategic and operational 'ifs' of the 1971 war would have been: 'If' Manekshaw had acquiesced in Indira Gandhi's compulsions of wanting to go into East Pakistan in April 1971, would there have been a different end result?

Despite many distinguished analysts having since debated Manekshaw's conservative approach, I believe there would have been a less than favourable outcome for several reasons. First and most importantly, the 'eyes and ears' of the Indian Army, the Mukti Bahini, would not have been the 'force multiplier', as they eventually turned out to be.

This would have meant that India's field commanders would have operated in an intelligence vacuum similar to the one that existed on the western front.

Their ensuing progress would have been significantly slower than what actually happened, considering that there would have been no Mukti Bahini to nibble, snipe and harass the Pakistanis in the hinterland.

The second reason for a different outcome would have been the absence of an 'enveloping strategy' that Manekshaw had envisaged. Manekshaw's staff had candidly told him that in the option for an operation in April/May, it was only the 'western option' with an entry into East Pakistan from Bengal that could be supported logistically.

This meant that only XXXIII Corps and II Corps would have been available for operations in full strength and fully stocked. As it turned out, these corps made the slowest progress during the final campaign.

Considering the larger distance from the west to Dacca and the more than formidable river obstacles, whether Dacca could have been threatened in the time frame that it eventually was would be well next to impossible to predict.

The last major reason for the likely stalling of an early attack was the possibility of getting bogged down by the monsoon should operational momentum be impacted by various reasons.

In the desert sector too, 'if' the commander of the Southern Army Command, Lieutenant General Bewoor, had had a backup force, he could have been more aggressive; if' Major General Khambatta, the divisional commander of 12 Infantry Division, had cut off the Pakistan army's 18 Division as it retreated after getting a bloody nose at Longewala despite all his logistics and terrain constraints; 'if' the IAF had been less ecstatic about its exploits at Longewala and pursued the retreating Pakistani brigade in close coordination with 12 Infantry Division; the Indian forces could have scored a major victory in the desert and even contemplated threatening the town of Rahim Yar Khan.

Coming to the psychological dimension of the Bangladesh campaign, (the Pakistan army commander in East Pakistan Lieutenant General A A K) Niazi's will to resist was broken by a combination of 'feeling enveloped' from all directions.

The immense pressure exerted on him by a 'manoeuvrist' commander in the form of Sagat Singh, who used the third dimension of aerial pressure effectively in tandem with the Tangail paradrop, effectively broke his will to resist.

When combined with the precision strike by IAF MiG-21s and Hunters on the Government House in Dacca, the psychological disintegration of Niazi's forces was complete and Pakistan's field commanders were convinced that it was better to surrender than be held responsible for an inevitable defeat and heavy loss of life.

Commenting on the contribution of operational commanders and staff at headquarters, Shammi Mehta says:

If there was no Sagat Singh and no Chandan Singh, there would have been no Dacca. If there was no Jacob (Lieutenant General Jacob was chief of staff at Eastern Command HQ), there would have been no spectacular surrender. One was a genius with troops and the other a genius with manipulating the mind of the enemy. It is as simple as that.

The 1971 war reaffirmed the importance of inspirational senior leadership in battle and heralded the emergence of a new fighting class amongst younger officers and men of India's armed forces, most of whom were born in the late 1930s and 1940s.

Identifying talent and nurturing it for operational effect seemed to be the forte of all the three chiefs. While Manekshaw placed all the talented officers who had worked with him at Eastern Command, Defence Services Staff College and Infantry School, like Lieutenant General Aurora, Major General Jacob, Lieutenant General Sagat Singh and Major General Inder Gill, in key positions prior to the 1971 war, (Air Chief Marshal P C) Lal too had his men like Malse, Wollen and Chandan Singh as his point men at key places.

In Krishnan, Kohli and Swaraj Prakash, (Chief of the Naval Staff) Admiral (S M) Nanda had chosen an excellent team to execute the naval campaigns on the eastern and western seaboards.

An old military adage says, 'There are no good troops or bad troops, only good or bad leaders.'

What then were the leadership traits of the successful field commanders of the Indian armed forces in the 1971 war?

While all the three services displayed higher leadership skills of an exceptional order, there were some stand-out performances. While initiative and momentum were exploited well by Pinto in Basantar, Sartaj Kargil and Zorawar Bakshi in the Chicken's Neck sector, Swaraj Prakash, the captain of INS Vikrant, dominated the eastern seas off the East Pakistan coast just as Chandan Singh used all his experience from the 1962 conflict to orchestrate the heli-borne operations.

However, it was not too difficult to single out the one operational leader who stood head and shoulders over the rest -- Sagat Singh.

Sagat was a go-getter from his younger days and General Pinto remembers him as a dashing type at the Infantry School and even later as a divisional commander when he controlled the Mizo insurgency in 1966 and gave a bloody nose to the Chinese in 1967 during two successive encounters at Nathula and Chola passes.

What of the younger lot? They were represented by officers and men like Hoshiar Singh, Arun Khetrapal, Albert Ekka, Don Lazarus, Nirmaljit Sekhon, Arun Prakash, and Bahadur Nariman Kavina, who commanded INS Nipat, the missile boat during the Karachi attack.

Bold and fearless, and reflecting the true diversity of independent India, they would prove to be role models for the next generation of war fighters who would be blooded in a completely new genre of warfare.

The 1971 war further demolished the martial race proposition, with troops from the southern part of India and the tribal belt of central India acquitting themselves with honour in various battles, foremost amongst them being in the battles of Akhaura, Basantar and Shakargarh.

[www.keralites.net] IBS TREATMENT IN AYURVEDA

IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME TREATMENT IN AYURVEDA
The digestive fire should be protected by every effort, because when it is lost the person becomes lost (dies), when it gets seized by the doshas the person gets seized by the group of diseases, when it is normal (Sama Agni) the person enjoys long life free from disease. – Astanga Hridaya
Definition:
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) affects about 10% of the adult population and 70% are women. It is a functional disorder of the gastrointestinal tract. The wall of the intestine exhibits rhythmic contractions called the peristaltic movements, which helps move the contents in the tract. In IBS, the walls of the intestine become sensitized to even mild stimulus which causes excess cramps. The intestines and the brain have the common embryonic origin.
The neurotransmitter Serotonin is secreted by both brain and intestine. In fact intestines secrete more Serotonin than brain. Some research suggests that IBS patients who suffer mainly from diarrhea may have increased serotonin levels in the gut, while those with constipation-predominant IBS have decreased amounts. Many, who suffer from IBS, also suffer from depression, negative thoughts, irritability and anxiety. Stress and IBS quite often go together.
What causes IBS?
Cause is not well understood. A combination of physical and mental health is blamed. IBS is more common in people who have strong family history of GI problems. Foods rich in carbohydrates, spicy or fatty foods, coffee, and alcohol. Could trigger the symptoms of IBS.
Investigations:
A lower GI series
Flexible sigmoidoscopy
Colonoscopy with or without a biopsy.
Stool test
Test for lactose intolerance
There is no satisfactory cure for IBS in modern medicine.
Irritable bowel syndrome treatment in ayurveda:
In Ayurveda, IBS is called GRAHANI DOSHA, which indicates the pathological state of function and integrity of the intestinal tract (mostly small intestine), known as GRAHANI. It is considered as one among the eight MAHA GADHAS (Diseases, which are difficult to treat)
Grahani, is the part of Maha Srotas (Alimentary Tract) which is the seat of digestive fire (Agni) and holds the food until it is digested and releases it. Charaka Samhita describes that imbalance in the Agni is the root cause of this disease. This incorrect digestive fire causes accumulation of Ama or toxin and weakens the digestive system.
Imbalance in any one or more of the doshas namely Vata, Pitta and Kapha could affect the Agni and trigger the complex Grahani Dosha.
The three types of deranged Agni ,
Vishama Agni – due to aggravated Vata,
Tikshna Agni – due to aggravated Pitta,
Manda Agni – due to aggravated Kapha.
However Grahani may also be caused by untreated chronic diarrhea.
Symptoms of Grahani caused by Vata:
These symptoms are related to five Vayus, which are as follows:
Prana vayu related symptoms:
Dryness of the palate,
Noise in the ears – tinnitus,
Cough, dyspnoea
Apana vayu related symptoms:
Constipation
Frequent bowel movements
Flatulence,
Passing wind on passing a bowel motion,
Frothy loose motions,
Painful bowel motions due to intestinal cramping,
Dry feces,
Pain in the rectum.
Samana Vayu related symptoms:
Variable appetite
Loose bowel motions due to increased peristalsis in the small intestine.
Vyana vayu related symptoms:
Chest pain,
Ppain in the sides of the abdomen, thighs, groin and neck.
Craving for all types of food.
The symptoms of Grahani caused by Pitta:
Ranjaka Pitta imbalance:
Feces are of bluish or yellow in color
Fetid body odor
Pachaka pitta imbalance:
Hyperacidity resulting in heart burn and sour belching
Liquid stool
Anorexia
Loss of thirst
The symptoms of Grahani caused by Kapha:
Kledaka Kapha imbalance:
In the stomach causes Manda Agni, low digestive fire
Nausea and vomiting
Heaviness in the stomach
Retention of undigested food in the stomach leading to fermentation and burping with bad smell
Loss of appetite.
Avalambaka Kapha imbalance:
Cough with mucus
Bodhaka Kapha imbalance:
Eexcess salivation
Loss of taste.
Eexcessive Kapha in the body causes lethargy,
Depression
Grahani can also be caused by a combination of two of the doshas or all three. The symptoms in such cases are related to different doshas as mentioned above.
An Ayurvedic Vaidya will be able to pinpoint affected doshas through the Ayurvedic Pulse Reading.
Line of treatment:
Agni Deepana – (Balancing digestive fire)
Ama Pachana – (Balancing and digesting the Ama)
Strengthening Grahani (Gastro intestinal system)
Balancing the doshas
Irritable bowel syndrome treatments:
Panchakarma;
Virechana karma and/ or Basti karma based on the condition of the patient
External therapies, Abhyanga, Navarakkizi, Shiro Dhara, Chakra Basti, Hrid Basti
Internal medications; depending on the phase of Grahani
Deepana – Pachana (Medicines which improve digestive fire and help in easy digestion of food and ama)
Grahi / Anulomana (Medicines which bind and hold the stools in case of Diarrhoea / mild laxative in case of constipation)
Activities:
Specific Yoga Asanas
Pranayama (breathing techniques)
meditation
deep relaxation techniques
Food and lifestyle changes: specific to the individual's constitution, nature of work and geographical conditions
Ayurvedic approach to IBS gives the best results.
