[www.keralites.net] ANEMIA - AN EASY GUIDE TO UNDERSTAND

Anemia: An Easy to Understand Guide
What is Anemia?
Anemia is a condition, when not enough red blood cells, which carry oxygen, are being delivered to your body's cells and organs. People with anemia look worn out and have less energy for activities because their hearts are working harder to pump red blood cells around your body.
Anemia is not a disease and is easily treatable. Sometimes it's caused by other diseases. If you suspect you might be anemic, it's really important to be in touch with a medical professional. A blood test easily confirms whether you have anemia. Now let's look at why you might develop anemia.
Why Would I Get Anemia?
Anemia also occurs when your body doesn't produce enough red blood cells, orthere isn't enough hemoglobin in your red blood cells. Hemoglobin is an important protein, which transports oxygen from the lungs to other cells in your body.
If all these new scientific terms are confusing you it might be easier to imagine the blood in your body as a transport system, where the red blood cells are the vehicles and the oxygen is the passengers, who need to go work at your cells and organs.
If you lose a lot of blood, or blood is being lost faster than new blood cells are being produced, you may become anemic. Women are more ly to develop anemia due to heavy menstruation, pregnancy or from bleeding after giving birth. Blood loss from trauma, surgery or internal bleeding caused by ulcers or other digestive disorders can also cause anemia.
Types of Anemia
There are several different kinds of anemia. The most common one is iron deficiency anemia, i.e. you have low levels of iron or unable to absorb iron easily. Other nutritional deficiencies cause anemia such as vitamin B12 deficiency anemia or folic acid deficiency anemia. In rare cases, anemia is caused by inherited blood diseases such as sickle cell anemia, Aplastic anemia, or Thalassemia.
How to Tell If You Have Anemia
altAnemia isn't initially obvious. When you have mild to moderate anemia, you will feel weak, be fatigued and experience shortness of breath. If the condition is not detected early more, symptoms might develop such as a racing heartbeat, dizziness, headaches, ringing in the ears and restless leg syndrome. Additionally your skin and fingernails will look pale, and you might have increased hair loss. As I said before, the best way to tell if you are anemic is by doing a blood test.
Signs and Symptoms:
Mild Anemia:
Weakness
Fatigue
Shortness of breath
Moderate to Severe Anemia:
Rapid heartbeat
Dizziness
Headaches
Ringing in the ears
Restless leg syndrome
Hair loss
Pale skin
Additional Signs:
Pale or brittle fingernails
Cold hands and feet
Low body temperature
Sexual dysfunction
Cuts take longer to heal
Inability to concentrate
Treatment Home Remedies
Iron Pills
Since the most common cause of anemia is low levels of iron, your doctor can prescribe iron pills, or you can buy supplements over the counter at a pharmacy. If one ingests too much iron, it can be toxic, and it is recommended you consult your doctor regarding the correct dosage for your age and weight.
Bananas, Honey, Almonds and Onions
The good news is that not only are these delicious foods, but they are also known for stimulating hemoglobin production. Start your day off by combining bananas, honey and almonds in oatmeal or with muesli for a nutritious breakfast.
Avoid Iron Blocking Foods
Certain foods need to be avoided close to meal times as they can prevent iron absorption.
Red wine, black and green tea, grapes, all heavy in tannins
Coffee, chocolate, and other caffeine laden foods
Milk and calcium products
Egg yolks, which contain the iron binding protein phosvitin
Soy products
Vitamin C
This super vitamin helps iron absorption. Vitamin C is found in many of nature's colorful fruits and vegetables and is particularly rich in oranges, strawberries, pomegranates or dates.
Eat Iron Rich Foods
Iron can also be obtained through your regular diet and making healthy food choices can only help. Here is a list of iron-rich foods, with choices for both meat lovers and vegetarians.
Meat-eaters' options:
Clams
Oysters
Fish
Red meat
Chicken liver
Vegetarian options:
Fortified dry cereal
Beets, lentils, and beans
Spinach, or other leafy green vegetables
Black molasses
Dried fruits such as raisins, currants, and prunes

Press your tongue against the roof of your mouth to beat brain freeze
Also referred to as "ice cream headaches," brain freezes are caused by a rapid increase in blood flow to the brain. After you down a frozen treat, trythrusting your tongue against
the roof of your mouth — this will warm up the palate and ease the flow of blood to the brain.

[www.keralites.net] ARE YOU A MOSQUITO MAGNET?

Are You A Mosquito Magnet? Why Mosquitoes Bite Some People More Than Others And an Easy Way To Avoid Bites
Are you a Mosquito Magnet? Why do mosquitoes bite some people more than others?
It's summertime, and most of us spend time outdoors however that means that we share the possibility of getting a mosquito bite. Research shows that 1 in 5 people are targets for these blood suckers. Are you one of them?
There are 3000 species of mosquitoes, and an estimated 200 are found in the United States. They are all different, but they all can transfer disease.
It's vital to take precautions to protect yourself from mosquito bites to save the trouble from the terrible itching that decrease your chances to catch diseases such as malaria, West Nile virus, dengue, yellow fever, and encephalitis.
The sad truth is that between 1 to 2 million people worldwide die every year from mosquito bites, the majority being from the malaria disease.
Scientists have found that most insects can detect special agents or chemicals that help defer them from biting. One special chemical is called DEET. It is improving to truly help stop mosquito biting. However, it does have harmful side effects that can cause a great health risk.
Mosquitoes can detect chemical compounds from roughly 50 yards away. The male mosquito does not come looking for blood however the females mosquitoes do they have a need for protein and iron in your blood, as this helps produce their eggs supply. They also can smell not only the chemical compounds, but body secretions and bacteria too.
Odds are the more you give off, the more you will be bitten. It is also true that the larger in body what you are, the more carbon dioxide you put off which makes you more appealing to the mosquitoes.
How can we protect ourselves from them? Several ideas include tricking the mosquitoes into thinking that you stink!
If you've already been bitten then try using these natural and organic ways to treat the inflammation of a mosquito bite. These natural substances help soothe irritated skin and kill micro bacteria. They are:
Aloe Vera – this plant has over one hundred and thirty compounds that can seep into the skin including 34 amino acids. All of these are beneficial and also great for burns and minor cuts.
Calendula- It moisturizes rejuvenates and soothes.
Chamomile- the best term of all that helps with soothing. It is packed with bioflavonoids such as a pigeon, luteolin, and quercetin. These can be used in boiled tea for naturally in simply applied to the skin.
Cinnamon- For centuries it has been known for its fantastic smell and taste in cooking recipes however did you know that it has an antibacterial and anti-fungal properties as well?
Cucumbers- a great vegetable that helps in the reduction of swelling and puffiness.
Raw or Organic Honey – most honey is suggested, however, there is a specific top from New Zealand, called manuka honey that is made from bees that strictly feed upon flowers of the Manuka bushes also commonly known as the "tea tree."
Lavender – just a cinnamon has a fantastic smell so does lavender. It is known for its calming and stress relieving sent but also great for mosquito bites as it has antimicrobial agents.
Neem Oil- when most older people think it helps protect you against antifungals such as ringworm, roundworm or Etc… however if it can help those then it may just help a common mosquito bite!
Basil- a great natural herb that will relieve itching. Try this by crushing up and apply directly to the bite.
Lemon and lime – Use this as a great way for limited and minimal outside mosquito repellent. Squeeze and apply directly.
Peppermint- Known for its fantastic Smell that also offers a cooling sensation for itching. You may apply this crushed in fresh or either from an essential oil.
Apple cider vinegar – you may cut down your risk of mosquitoes by simply adding this to your bath water and soaking for around 30 to 35 minutes. The acidity will help relieve itching, and the smell is great for a soothing and calming sensation
Baking soda- easily dissolvable in your bath water and soak for around 30 minutes.
Witch hazel- A mixture made out of hazel and baking soda. This can be applied directly to the bit to help with swelling.
And lastly, hot and cold therapies are very beneficial. A recent study published in the Scientific American Journal recommends using an ice pack the place on mosquito bites instead of analgesics.
However, those that prefer heat therapy over cold therapy suggest applying heat to the spot to relieve the itchiness by applying a heated spoon under hot tap water for around a minute and a half to heat the metal. Then apply the heated spoon directly to the area, but be sure that it is not overheated to wear it would scald, hurt, or burn the person that encountered the mosquito bite.
Regardless of which way you decide to handle your mosquito bites please do bear in mind the necessity of it. With many people losing their lives due to mosquito-borne illnesses, this is no laughing or joking matter. Remember to dress wisely, keep the list of natural remedies on hand and use common sense when performing hot and cold therapies. We all want to enjoy the beautiful summer weather, and maybe you can now that you know these better ways to avoid mosquitoes!

[www.keralites.net] DEALING WITH CHOLESTEROL LEVELS

 Dealing with cholesterol levels
Cholesterol: What Your Level Means
What is cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a waxy substance your body uses to protect nerves, make cell tissues and produce certain hormones. Your liver makes all the cholesterol your body needs. Your body also gets cholesterol directly from the food you eat (such as eggs, meats and dairy products). Too much cholesterol can have negative impacts on your health.
Why is a high cholesterol level unhealthy?
While some cholesterol is needed for good health, too much cholesterol in your blood can increase your risk for heart disease, including heart attack or stroke.
If you have high cholesterol, your body may store the extra cholesterol in your arteries. Your arteries are blood vessels that carry blood from your heart to the rest of your body. Buildup of cholesterol in your arteries is known as plaque. Over time, plaque can become hard and make your arteries narrow. Large deposits of plaque can completely block an artery. Cholesterol plaques can also split open, leading to formation of a blood clot that blocks the flow of blood.
If an artery that supplies blood to the muscles in your heart becomes blocked, a heart attack can occur. If an artery that supplies blood to your brain becomes blocked, a stroke can occur.
Risk factors for heart disease
Already had a heart attack
A man, 45 years of age or older
A woman, 55 years of age or older
A woman who is going through menopause or has completed menopause
Have an immediate family member (parent or sibling) who has had heart disease
Cigarette smoking
High blood pressure or diabetes
Overweight or obese
Inactive
Normal artery vs. blocked artery
When should I start having my cholesterol level checked?
You can't tell if you have high cholesterol without having it checked. All adults 20 years of age and older should have their cholesterol checked every 5 years. If your cholesterol level is high or you have other risk factors for heart disease (see the box above), you may need to have it checked sooner and more often.
A blood test known as a lipid panel is usually the way cholesterol is checked.
Are there different types of cholesterol?
Yes. Cholesterol travels through the blood in different types of bundles, called lipoproteins.
Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) delivers cholesterol to the body.
High-density lipoprotein (HDL) removes cholesterol from the bloodstream.
This explains why too much LDL cholesterol is bad for the body, and why a high level of HDL is good. The balance between the types of cholesterol tells you what your cholesterol level means (see the box below).
For example, if your total cholesterol level is high because of a high LDL level, you may be at higher risk of heart disease or stroke. If your total level is high only because of a high HDL level, you're probably not at higher risk.
Total cholesterol level
Less than 200 is best.
200 to 239 is borderline high.
240 or more means you're at increased risk for heart disease.
LDL cholesterol levels
Below 100 is ideal for people who have a higher risk of heart disease.
100 to 129 is near optimal.
130 to 159 is borderline high.
160 or more means you're at a higher risk for heart disease.
HDL cholesterol levels
Less than 40 means you're at higher risk for heart disease.
60 or higher greatly reduces your risk of heart disease.
What can I do to improve my cholesterol level?
If you have high cholesterol, it may be necessary for you to make some lifestyle changes.
If you smoke, quit.
Exercise regularly.
If you're overweight, losing just 5 to 10 pounds can help improve your cholesterol levels.
Make sure to eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fish- all of which promote heart health.
Avoid saturated and Trans fats, which can raise cholesterol levels.
Also limit your overall cholesterol intake to less than 300 milligrams per day and 200 milligrams if you have heart disease.
Do your test reports reveal a high cholesterol level? Here's how to get it under control...
Eat more beans
You cannot rule out carbohydrates completely from your diet because they are important sources of energy for the body. However, some sources of energy are better than the others. For example, beans and whole grains have more fibre and less sugar. Hence, they play an important role in bringing down the risk of diabetes while simultaneously controlling the body's cholesterol level. White bread, potatoes, etc do just the opposite.
Get moving
Half an hour of physical activity on a regular basis goes a long way in lowering your cholesterol levels. If you indulge in a vigorous exercise, such as jogging, experts suggest that even 20 minutes thrice a week is enough. A tip for starters is not to carry on for 30 minutes at a stretch. You may break down the exercise to three intervals of 10 minutes each. If you hate exercising, or feel that gyming is too boring, go for a walk.
Eat out wisely
When you are eating out, it becomes all the more imperative to stay cautious. Restaurants have a habit of supersizing everything. Stay clear of fried food as much as possible. Go for boiled, baked or steamed food. Also, ask for the sauces to be served at the side and not mixed with your food. Most of these sauces are high in sodium and calories.
Don't stress
Stress directly affects your cholesterol levels and can also lead to high blood pressure. Try and reduce your stress levels with relaxation techniques such as meditation and yoga. A simple way out to reduce stress levels is to exercise deep breathing.
What about medicine to lower cholesterol?
Depending on your risk factors, if healthy eating and exercise don't work to lower your cholesterol level, your doctor may suggest medicine.

[www.keralites.net] WHAT IS THE SURVIVAL RATE & DIAGNOSIS OF OVARIAN CANCER

What is the survival rate and prognosis of ovarian cancer?
Epithelial ovarian cancer is the most deadly of the gynecologic cancers. Approximately 80% of patients will eventually die of the disease. However, survival in the short term is quite good, meaning many years. With the addition of IP chemotherapy, the survival of ovarian cancer has been significantly extended. According to recent studies, if a patient undergoes optimal debulking, followed by IP chemotherapy, then they have a greater than 50% chance to still be alive in six years. This is quite good compared to other advanced stage cancers. Even in the recurrent setting, epithelial ovarian cancer is often very sensitive to chemotherapy. The disease can often go in to complete remission (no detectable disease) many times. However, once it recurs, it is not curable and will continue to come back.
Germ cell and stromal tumors have a much better prognosis. They are often cured because they are more often detected at early stages.
