[www.keralites.net] ACUPUNCTURE TO TREAT HEADACHES

Acupuncture to Treat Headaches
Acupuncture has been used for centuries in Eastern and Chinese medicine, but now more than 80 million Chinese use this therapy to treat chronic headaches. At Taiwan's Kaohsiung Medical University it was found that daily acupuncture treatments work much better than prescription muscle relaxants. This is because acupuncture prompts the release of powerful painkilling hormones called endorphins and relaxes the scalp muscles to soothe the overactive pain nerves.

[www.keralites.net] Are You A vegetarian?

Are you a vegetarian?
Many vegetarians do not get enough protein, Omega 3 fatty
acids, and Vitamin B 12 which is not easily available in plant
foods. Here is what I think is beneficial to those who love animals
and hate killing them for food.
Do you eat all kinds of vegetables available? Eating all pigmented
vegetables and fruits are essential as different vegetables contain
different nutrients.
Eating at least one fruit a day is very important for good health.
Out of all fruits, I would pick an apple to give you. Here is a
list that may help you fix a healthy vegetarian diet.
1.Iron- Beans, seeds, soybeans, tofu, fortified breakfast cereals,
dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach are rich sources of
iron. Among fruits, dried fruits like apricots, figs, or prunes
are good. In order to increase iron absorption, vitamin C is
essential.
2. Protein is something that vegetarians don't get as much as non
vegetarians do. They have to eat soybeans, lentils, nuts, peas,
quinoa grain, broccoli, artichoke, spinach, potatoes, bananas and
certain berries are some examples of high protein foods.
3. Zinc is not to declines as it is vital for good immunity. Whole
grains, dairy products, soy, nus and legumes are necessary for zin
supply.
4. Vitamin C can be found in vegetables like tomatoes, Amaranth
Leaves (chauli patta), Broccoli, Cabbage family like Brussels
Sprouts, Butternut Squash, Capsicum and the like and all citrus
fruits.
5. Take soy milk, orange juice, beans and milk products for calcium.
6. Vitamin D is essential of calcium absorption. Hence eat
mushrooms.
7. Carbohydrates are essential for fueling up. Whole grains give
you energy as well as fibre.
8. Vitamin B12 is only present in animal foods like milk products,
egg and hence, you will need supplements if you are a vegan.
9. Your vitamins and other nutrients will get absorbed well only if
you take enough dietary fats. Hence you cannot completely eliminate
fats but have them in the form of nuts, oils or avocados.
10. Have flax seeds, walnuts, soybeans and canola oil for omega 3
fatty acids.
Take care!

[www.keralites.net] VERY PRACTICAL ADVICE

 Very practical advice.
Dr. Shigeaki Hinohara, Japan, turned 101 last year.
As a centurion, he was interviewed, and gave his advice for a long and healthy life.
Shigeaki Hinohara is one of the world's longest-serving physicians and educators. Hinohara's magic touch is legendary: Since 1941 he has been healing patients at St. Luke's International Hospital in Tokyo and teaching at St. Luke's College of Nursing.
He has published around 15 books since his 75th birthday, including one "Living Long, Living Good" that has sold more than 1.2 million copies. As the founder of the New Elderly Movement, Hinohara encourages others to live a long and happy life, a quest in which no role model is better than the doctor himself.
Doctor Shigeaki Hinohara's main points for a long and happy life:
* Energy comes from feeling good, not from eating well or sleeping a lot. We all remember how as children, when we were having fun, we often forgot to eat or sleep. I believe that we can keep that attitude as adults, too. It's best not to tire the body with too many rules such as lunchtime and bedtime.
* All people who live long regardless of nationality, race or gender share one thing in common: None areoverweight. For breakfast I drink coffee, a glass of milk and some orange juice with a tablespoon of olive oil in it. Olive oil is great for the arteries and keeps my skin healthy. Lunch is milk and a few cookies, or nothing when I am too busy to eat. I never get hungry because I focus on my work. Dinner is veggies, a bit of fish and rice, and, twice a week, 100 grams of lean meat.
* Always plan ahead. My schedule book is already full until 2014, with lectures and my usual hospital work.
* There is no need to ever retire, but if one must, it should be a lot later than 65. The current retirement age was set at 65 half a century ago, when the average life-expectancy in Japan was 68 years and only 125 Japanese were over 100 years old. Today, Japanese women live to be around 86 and men 80, and we have 36,000 centenarians in our country. In 20 years we will have about 50,000 people over the age of 100...
* Share what you know. I give 150 lectures a year, some for 100 elementary-school children, others for 4,500 business people. I usually speak for 60 to 90 minutes, standing, to stay strong.
* When a doctor recommends you take a test or have some surgery, ask whether the doctor would suggest that his or her spouse or children go through such a procedure. Contrary to popular belief, doctors can't cure everyone. So why cause unnecessary pain with surgery I think music and animal therapy can help more than most doctors imagine.
* To stay healthy, always take the stairs and carry your own stuff. I take two stairs at a time, to get my muscles moving.
* My inspiration is Robert Browning's poem "Abt Vogler." My father used to read it to me. It encourages us to make big art, not small scribbles. It says to try to draw a circle so huge that there is no way we can finish it while we are alive. All we see is an arch; the rest is beyond our vision but it is there in the distance.
* Pain is mysterious, and having fun is the best way to forget it. If a child has a toothache, and you start playing a game together, he or she immediately forgets the pain. Hospitals must cater to the basic need of patients: We all want to have fun. At St. Luke's we have music and animal therapies, and art classes.
* Don't be crazy about amassing material things. Remember: You don't know when your number is up, and you can't take it with you to the next place.
* Hospitals must be designed and prepared for major disasters, and they must accept every patient who appears at their doors. We designed St. Luke's so we can operate anywhere: in the basement, in the corridors, in the chapel. Most people thought I was crazy to prepare for a catastrophe, but on March 20, 1995, I was unfortunately proven right when members of the Aum Shinrikyu religious cult launched a terrorist attack in the Tokyo subway. We accepted 740 victims and in two hours figured out that it was sarin gas that had hit them. Sadly we lost one person, but we saved 739 lives.
* Science alone can't cure or help people. Science lumps us all together, but illness is individual. Each person is unique, and diseases are connected to their hearts. To know the illness and help people, we need liberal and visual arts, not just medical ones.
* Life is filled with incidents. On March 31, 1970, when I was 59 years old, I boarded the Yodogo, a flight from Tokyo to Fukuoka. It was a beautiful sunny morning, and as Mount Fuji came into sight, the plane was hijacked by the Japanese Communist League-Red Army Faction. I spent the next four days handcuffed to my seat in 40-degree heat. As a doctor, I looked at it all as an experiment and was amazed at how the body slowed down in a crisis.
* Find a role model and aim to achieve even more than they could ever do. My father went to the United States in 1900 to study at Duke University in North Carolina. He was a pioneer and one of my heroes. Later I found a few more life guides, and when I am stuck, I ask myself how they would deal with the problem.
* It's wonderful to live long. Until one is 60 years old, it is easy to work for one's family and to achieve one's goals. But in our later years, we should strive to contribute to society. Since the age of 65, I have worked as a volunteer. I still put in 18 hours seven days a week and love every minute of it.

[www.keralites.net] THE TOP FIVE VITAMINS YOU SHOULD NOT TAKE

The Top Five Vitamins You Should Not Take
I used to take vitamin supplements almost every day. Taking vitamins seemed like a good idea: after all, we know that vitamins are essential for life, and vitamin deficiencies can definitely hurt you. I always thought that vitamins were an inexpensive way to get a little bit healthier.
Millions of Americans apparently agree with me. Close to half of the population in the U.S. takes vitamins, with multi-vitamins being the most popular.* Vitamins are sold in virtually every grocery store, ranging from mega-markets like Wegmans to the organic Whole Foods chain.
The vitamin and supplements industry, which is immensely profitable, relies on the intuition that if a little bit of something is good for you, a bit more can't hurt. Right?
Wrong. If you don't have a serious vitamin deficiency, taking supplemental vitamins doesn't provide any benefit, in almost all cases that have been studied. What's even more surprising is this: routinely taking mega-doses of vitamins might actually harm you.
So here are the top 5 vitamins that you should not take (unless your doctor recommends it):
1. Vitamin C. Perhaps the most popular single vitamin supplement, vitamin C occurs in plentiful amounts in many fresh fruits and vegetables. In the early days of global exploration, sailors often died from scurvy, caused by the lack of vitamin C. Way back in the 1700′s, Scottish doctor James Lind famously conducted an experiment that proved that citrus fruit cured scurvy, although vitamin C itself wasn't discovered until the 1930s.
Vitamin C gained its current popularity through the woefully misguided efforts of Linus Pauling, who published a book in 1970 recommending mega-doses of C to prevent the common cold. Although Pauling was a brilliant chemist (and Nobel laureate), he was completely wrong about vitamin C, as Paul Offit explains in detail in his new book, "Do You Believe in Magic?"
Vitamin C doesn't prevent or cure colds. This question has been studied exhaustively: a review in 2005 covering 50 years worth of research concluded that
"the lack of effect … throws doubt on the utility of this wide practice."
Although Vitamin C is generally safe, megadoses of 2000 mg or more can increase the risk of kidney stones, which can be excruciatingly painful.
2. Vitamin A and beta carotene. Vitamins A, C, and E are all anti-oxidants, which have been promoted for their supposed anti-cancer properties. The evidence doesn't support this: for example, in a large study supported by the National Cancer Institute*, smokers who took vitamin A were more likely to get lung cancer than those who didn't.
Vitamin A plays an important role in vision, but too much vitamin A can be toxic, causing multiple serious side effects. Perhaps the most famous cases of vitamin A toxicity occurred in early polar explorers, who ate the livers of their sled dogs, not realizing that the livers had excessively high amounts of vitamin A. Antarctic explorer Douglas Mawson barely survived, and his companions died, probably of vitamin A poisoning.
3. Vitamin E. Long touted as an anti-cancer agent, vitamin E is a very popular supplement. A large study last year, of 35,533 men, looked at vitamin E and the risk of prostate cancer. The authors found that the risk of cancerincreased for men taking vitamin E. In an even larger review done at Johns Hopkins University, Edgar Miller and Lawrence Appel found that the overall risk of death was higher in people who took vitamin E. The Mayo Clinic summarizes the evidence this way:
"Evidence suggests that regular use of high-dose vitamin E may increase the risk of death from all causes by a small amount."
4. Vitamin B6. The B vitamins, including B6 and B12, are present in many foods, and deficiencies are rare. But taking B6 supplements for a long time can be harmful, as NIH's website explains*:
"People almost never get too much vitamin B6 from food. But taking high levels of vitamin B6 from supplements for a year or longer can cause severe nerve damage, leading people to lose control of their bodily movements."
5. Multi-vitamins. This is the big one. With nearly 40% of Americans taking a multi-vitamin, they must be good for you, right? But a huge study that I wrote about last year, looking at 38,772 women over 25 years, found that the overall risk of death increased with long-term use of multivitamins, vitamin B6, folic acid, iron, magnesium, zinc, and copper. Death, one must admit, is a pretty bad outcome.
On the evidence, supplementing your diet with any of these 5 vitamins carries little or no benefit, and may cause you harm. This is why we do science, people. Our intuitions aren't always right: just because a little bit of something is good for you does not mean that a lot of it is even better.
Vitamins don't "boost your immune system," they don't promote joint health, they don't reduce stress, and they don't help prevent colds or other common ailments.
So what should one do? Ignore the marketing, and treat supplements like you would any other medicine: take them with caution. If you are taking regular vitamin supplements, or thinking about it, ask your doctor before doing so.
And by the way, 100 grams of spinach has healthy amounts of vitamins A, C, E, K, several B vitamins, and essential minerals including iron and calcium.
So ditch the vitamins and eat your spinach. Or blueberries. Blueberries are great.

[www.keralites.net] 10 WAYS TO AVOID KNEE SURGERY

10 Ways to Avoid Knee Surgery
Learn how to ease osteoarthritis and postpone surgery.S
If you have osteoarthritis, surgery is rarely a first resort. There are plenty of things you can do to avoid (or at least postpone) heading into the operating room. Take care of your knees with these solutions.
No-brainers:
Weight loss. For many, weight loss is a basic but crucial way to help avoid knee surgery. Shedding just 15 pounds can cut knee pain in half, according to a recent study presented at the American College of Rheumatology's annual scientific meeting. And should you need arthritis knee surgery later, you'll decrease your risk of complications and reduce strain on your knees, which will make your rehabilitation go more smoothly.
Physical activity. The health of your knees depends on movement. Strong muscles support the joint and relieve pressure. Movement keeps tissues within the joint flexible, lubricated and replenished with nutrients that help healing. If you end up having knee surgery, the rehab will be easier if you start strengthening muscles before surgery. Walking is a great way to keep your knees healthy and pain free. Learn more about why exercise is so important if you have arthritis and hope to avoid knee surgery, and get some great ideas for maintaining motivation, stretching, safe moves and more.
No (or very few) side effects:
Braces. Prescribed by a doctor and fitted by a physical therapist, braces can improve the alignment of the knee, relieving pain.
Corticosteroid injections into the knee joint help to reduce inflammation, which can alleviate pain without causing side effects associated with oral corticosteroids.
Electrical stimulation may reduce pain by strengthening the quadriceps (the large muscles on the front of the thigh that help stabilize the knee joint), or it may even encourage regeneration of cartilage cells.
Hyaluronic acid injections, which supplement a naturally occurring lubricant lacking in the joints of people with osteoarthritis, may decrease pain and increase function for some people and help delay arthritis knee surgery -- although their use is controversial.
Acupuncture has been shown to relieve knee pain in some studies, but there is little good-quality evidence that it works better than placebo.
You'll likely take one:
Over-the-counter medications, such as the analgesic acetaminophen (Tylenol) and the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve), ease pain. But several recent studies indicate that some NSAIDs may delay healing of connective tissues such as cartilage or tendons.
Prescription medications are available to ease pain and decrease inflammation. Whether they improve tissues in the joint continues to be investigated.
Dietary supplements. The National Institutes of Health is funding a study to see whether the combination of glucosamine and chondroitin helps repair cartilage. The duo has been shown to reduce pain in people with moderate-to-severe knee pain – those who need it most.

[www.keralites.net] A BEGINNERS' GUIDE TO MEDITATION AT HOME

A Beginners' Guide to Meditation at Home
Meditation has many known health benefits, such as increasing longevity and reducing stress. People have been practicing meditation for over two millennia, with Hindu texts describing meditative forms as early as the 6th-century BCE. In my youth, if I heard the word 'meditation', all I could think about was a person in the Far East, sitting with his legs crossed and humming to himself. A couple of years ago I was introduced to real meditation and discovered the calming and healing properties it has, and now I'd love to share them with you.
What is meditation
The Webster dictionary defines meditation as "the act or process of spending time in quiet thought: the act or process of meditating". Many people meditate without even knowing that they're doing it. A person sitting and fishing for a few hours in silence is performing a type of meditation, the same as another who might be jogging with their headphones on. It involves dedicating 100% of your attention to one subject. Meditation has also been a key factor in Eastern religions such as Buddhism and Hinduism, as well as Western religions like Christianity and Judaism.
A Beginners' Guide to Meditation at Home
Health benefits of meditating
Meditation has many proven health benefits, such as silencing your internal chatter, calming and grounding one's self, and getting in touch with yourself, to name a few. A recent Harvard University study discovered that daily meditation can rebuild the brain's gray matter in as little as eight weeks. Participants also reported a reduction in stress - a prime factor in the decrease in gray matter density.
Who can meditate
From young children to elderly people, everyone can meditate. There are many forms of meditation, some more suitable for people of different ages, so don't be daunted if one form doesn't work for you. Finding the meditation that suits you best is very gratifying.
Before you start meditating
The first thing you need to do, is decide on the purpose of your meditation: You may want to calm down, get to know yourself better, or even make an important business decision. Knowing why you're meditating is the first step to a useful meditation. You don't need special clothes (but comfortable ones make it easier) or equipment. All you need a quiet spot and to reserve some time for it.
A Beginners' Guide to Meditation at Home
When you begin your meditation, don't lay down or sit in a slumped position – these positions do not help you stay alert and focused. Sit up straight, either on a chair, on your heels or cross-legged. Find the position that is comfortable for you, sitting in the lotus position is not mandatory in meditation.
Don't meditate after eating, digestion can be very distracting during a session. If you just had a meal, wait for 2 hours and let your stomach calm down. You should avoid smoking for at least 30 minutes before the meditation.
A Beginners' Guide to Meditation at Home
Find a quiet spot that you will be comfortable in, this is essential for the first few times you meditate. Once you are comfortable with meditation, you'll be able to do it in noisier places. Remember to switch off your cell phone - it's a distraction. Consider lighting a scented candle or some incense to help your meditation and switch off or dim the lights – bright lights may also be a distraction.
How to meditate
Do some basic stretching before you start, it will loosen up your muscles and help you be more attentive to your body later on.
Breathing is the most important factor in meditation, we use each breath as a focal point. Close your eyes and deeply inhale through your nose, then slowly exhale through your mouth. Feel how your chest expands and contracts with each breath. Listen to the silence between breaths - notice how everything becomes still and quiet. You may even notice your heartbeat slowing down. If your thoughts begin to scatter, concentrate on your breathing.
As a beginner, focusing might not come naturally. Give it time and be patient with yourself. Some people find that focusing on their breathing won't quiet their minds, and may need to try other methods:
Counting your breaths may help – count each breath and when you reach ten, start over. However, if you become focused on the numbers and not on the breathing, stop.
Another alternative is repeating a mantra – there's a reason some people say "Om" when they meditate – it helps drown the outside world and focus on the sound. You can repeat any other word that helps you calm down if Om is not for you.
Try visualizing a calm place – it can be anything: the beach, a forest, your childhood home, etc. as long as it's your sanctuary. When you find your sanctuary, don't be afraid to explore it – there's no need to try and "create" your surroundings, they're already there.
Set aside at least fifteen minutes a day for meditation (more is welcome). Remember: short daily repetitions are better than one long weekly session because they form a habit. Eventually, the practice of meditation will find its way into your everyday life. You'll find yourself considering your food choices more carefully, making decisions more consciously and focusing on things you read, watch or listen to with greater attention.
One last thing
Learning to silence your inner thoughts takes practice, but managing to attain inner peace is a huge reward. Remember – "practice makes perfect", so keep meditating regularly. It may take you a few weeks or even a couple of months to learn to properly focus, so don't get frustrated or disheartened it you're not a meditation guru overnight.
