Know the Right Time to Visit a Fertility Specialist.
If you've been facing problems in conceiving, it may be time to get yourself checked as it's possible that you may be suffering from certain fertility issues or need professional guidance. A series of tests usually determine the root cause of the problem. These tests can include a physical examination, analysis of semen and blood tests, amongst others. There are certain factors that you and your partner must keep in mind when deciding upon the best time to opt for these tests and get started on an infertility treatment programme.
If you're a female, it's time to get yourself examined when:
1. You haven't been able to conceive for over a year despite trying (when you are under 35)
2. You haven't been able to conceive after trying for 6 months (above the age of 35)
3. You've had 1 or more miscarriages
4. You've been ovulating irregularly and your previous drug treatment has failed to correct the problem
5. You suffer from damaged or blocked fallopian tubes and endometriosis (a condition where tissues that cover your uterus also develop outside of the womb, causing pain and bleeding)
6. You have a history of genital infections
If you're a male, you should consider an infertility treatment if you experience the following:
1. Facing difficulty in sperm ejaculation
2. Suffering from a low sperm count including poor sperm movement or structure (sperm's shape and size)
3. Having an undescended testicle (a genital abnormality that occurs when the testicle fails to move into its normal position in the scrotum during the first 3 months of your life)
Apart from the above mentioned points, another important factor that you and your partner must decide upon is whether or not you intend to use assisted reproductive procedures, such as ICSI (IntraCytoplasmic Semen Insertion) or in vitro fertilization (IVF) to help in conceiving. While the former sees fertilisation occurring naturally after the eggs and sperm get placed inside one of the two fallopian tubes, the latter deals with the transference of the embryo created in the laboratory into the uterus.
Even though the thought of infertility can be disappointing for you and your partner, early and timely intervention can help in easing up the process of conception and remove obstacles that might hinder your chances of having a baby.

[www.keralites.net] Bengaluru scientists develop artificial liver tissue :

Bengaluru scientists develop artificial liver tissue :-
Bengaluru: At a time when scientists all over the world are struggling to develop artificial liver tissue, three Bengaluru scientists have actually developed such tissues that perform functions of the human liver. This breakthrough has not just brightened hopes for patients seeking liver tissues from live donors, but has also brought a potential alternative to artificial extracorporeal liver support (or liver dialysis) used in detoxification treatment for liver failure - a process similar to hemodialysis.

The trio that achieved the breakthrough comprises Arun Chandru, Dr Abdullah Chand and Dr Sivarajan T - all senior scientists at Pandorum Technologies Pvt Ltd, the Bengaluru-based biotechnology start-up working on tissue engineering.

But the made-in-India mini liver will presently serve as test platforms for discovery and development of drugs with better efficacy, less side-effects and lower costs.
And it could eventually replace the human liver, thus enabling transplants without waiting for living donors. The process of making this made-in-India liver tissue involved taking cells from a live human liver and encapsulating them in hydrogel.

The Bengaluru scientists are now in talks with the pharmaceutical industry specialised in liver-specific drugs, a multi-billion-dollar market.

[www.keralites.net] A teenage girl lived 118 days without a heart :-

A teenage girl lived 118 days without a heart :
D'Zhana Simmons was only 14 when she needed a heart transplant.
She suffered renal failure and received kidney transplant too.
Simmons survived 4 months with two artificial pumps.
She underwent two heart transplants.
The medical fraternity would agree that one needs a heart to survive and without it, there is perhaps no life at all, but with an exception of a teenage American girl who survived four months without a heart. She was kept alive with the help of a custom-made artificial blood-pumping machine until she received a heart transplant.

The doctors had known of a similar case in which an adult was kept alive in Germany for close to nine months without a heart. However, the teen patient, D'Zhana Simmons of South Carolina, was the first child that had survived in the same manner for a long time.

She was reported to have said that there was no guarantee the equipment would work until a heart was arranged for the transplant. To live without a heart for so long, she said, was as if she didn't really exist but was just there.

Simmons who was 14 years old at the time suffered from dilated cardiomyopathy. In this condition, the patient's heart weakens, becomes enlarged and does not really pump blood efficiently. Simmons had a heart transplant on July 2 2008 at Miami's Holtz Children's Hospital, but the new heart had failed to function properly and was then removed quickly. Two heart pumps were then made and implanted to keep her blood flowing while she fought several ailments and recovered her strength. Doctors had then implanted another heart on 29th October.

Simmons also received a kidney transplant the day after the second heart transplant. Her prognosis, as reported by her doctor, was good.
