These images show a bizarre ritual in eastern India where villagers, including children as young as 10, roast themselves above an open fire in the hope it will bring them good luck.

Revellers in the remote village in Jharkhand state tie themselves upside down onto a wooden pole that hand hangs just feet above a raging fire. Seconds later they throw themselves into the flames.

Locals believe that the unusual practice helps protect the village from drought and disease, adding that criticism over the safety is misguided and there are no reports of those taking part ever being injured.

'Anyone between 10 and 65 years of age is eligible to participate in the ritual,' he added.

'We are not scared. My parents and friends have been doing it for years now. No one ever has been hurt...,God Shiv and Goddess Parvati watches over us,' the villager went on to say.

Mr Nayak said he enjoys the thrill of hanging over the fire and feels proud to be one of the participants.

The ritual, locally known as Chutiya Manda Puja, is organized every year to 'protect the village from natural calamities and epidemics'.

An ardent participant, 52-year-old Munna Kirkey, said that participants have to adhere to a strict diet to prepare for what is known as Agni Pareeksha, meaning trial by fire.

'We start consuming Bengal gram and jaggery sorbet 10 days before the trial starts and stay away from sinning,' Mr Kirkey said.

'Hanging over the fire is the ultimate test of our austerity...If participants don't follow the rules they will vomit during the fire test and may even get burns,' he added.

However, Mr Kirkey pledges that so far, there has been no such incident.

Those who pass the hanging fire test are eligible to proceed on to the next state - to walk on ambers.

Raju Sahu, 40, who has been participating in the ritual for last 40 years, believes the ritual is important for the betterment of the community.

'If we don't perform the rituals anything can happen. In my lifetime I have never missed to participate and my children will follow me,' says Sahu.

King Parikshit finally allowed Kali Yuga to stay and allowed him four places where he could live. Where liquor and wine, where a prostitute stays, where there is animal slaughter and where gambling is, in those places he would be allowed to live and thrive.

Kali Yuga humbly pleaded that his family was very big and that it comprises members like lust, anger, greed, ego, jealousy, lies etc. How shall all of them fit in these allotted places? On this king Parikshit said that they should all then dwell in gold. In this way, Kali Yuga resides in the 5 places allotted by king Parikshit. Those people who yearn for higher ideals should not even go near these five things. In the Kali Yuga, by seeking the blessings of Lord Jagannath Puri, one shall attain salvation. And by taking shelter of Sri Caitanya mahaprabhu by chanting the holy names of the lord one can return back to godhead.

Unlike the others, in this era, if one even prays to God for sometime with total faith and devotions and sings the praises of the Lord, he shall fulfill all his desires within no time. He shall be liberated from all his sins and shall consequently have the opportunity to return back to home back to godhead"

[www.keralites.net] Are you as Ambitious as Steve Jobs, Maradona and Picasso?

Ambition, by definition, is to have strong inner desire in order to achieve something plus the willingness of striving in order to achieve it. The goal can be in terms of wealth, education, job promotion, honour or fame. When you are ambitious you posses great deal of energy inside your brain and heart. This energy acts as fuel to perform all the necessary steps in order to achieve what you want to achieve. You play your 'games' like Maradona; you imagine and paint your 'life portraits' like Picasso and you act like Steve Jobs when it comes to creativity and innovation.

However this does not mean that if you do not have expertise as those of Maradona or Pablo Picasso or Steve Jobs, you cannot be ambitious. The purpose of mentioning these personalities is that the level of energy you should be striving for should be as that of such personalities. You should not limit the size of your dreams. People who aim high, achieve high. It doesn't matter who you are; what matters is what you want to be.

So if you are ambitious, check yourself against these qualities:

1- Do you have a concrete goal. Have to your tried writing your short term and long term goals on a piece of paper. Trust me, it helps a lot. Even I suggest writing it on a paper and paste it somewhere in your room so that you keep looking at it multiple times a day.

2- Do you have solid vision on how you are going to achieve it? Have you thought what actions do you need to perform? Have you arranged the resources in order to move ahead?

3- Are you a genuine ambitious person having burning desire to achieve? Know this story? Once a young man asked Socrates the secret to success. He took the young man to the river and ducked him into the water. The boy tried hard to take his head out but Socrates was strong enough to hold him there for some more seconds. Then later Socrates asked him what was the most important thing he wanted when the head was in water? They boy said, "Oxygen and I was too desperate to have it". Socrates said, "this is the level of burning desire which you must possess for your goals. When you have it, you will succeed"

Remember, failing to plan is planning to fail. So the core advice of this article is to have a Analytical thinking, concrete action plan, fearless mind-set, positive thought process and consistent attitude in order to convert your ambitions into realities. Develop the power of now and start behaving the person you want to be.

#4 - KNOW YOUR FACTS AND FIGURES: Your communication skills will be quickly rendered meaningless if you don't show a thorough command of the pertinent data. Be prepared. Don't be the peon rummaging through notes trying to find something. KNOW IT. This underscores the confidence angle from point #1. Know the data from memory, master it and you will exude confidence and convince your audience of your skill and acumen.

#5 - DON'T WAIT TO TALK, LISTEN: Business communication, like any other, requires give-and-take. It is a two-way street. Listen to the person you're talking to and be ready to absorb their input. This not only helps you seem engaged, it helps you stay mentally focused on the discussion at hand.

#6 - BE CLEAR, BE CONCISE: "Brevity is the soul of wit," Shakespeare famously said. What he meant by this is don't waste people's time. If you can say something in one sentence, then by all means do so. Effective communication is most often simple communication.

Be prepared, be confident, know your facts ahead of time and look everyone in the eye, and you will master the board room in no time.
