Submission Tips For Getting Published
Posted: 01 Oct 2013 07:48 AM PDT
For the past couple of years I've been offering workshops for photographers on "How To Get Published". Three were in conjunction with a photography workshop – one in Malibu, one in Bakersfield, and one in Santa Barbara. Then there was The Experience in Las Vegas during WPPI which I put on with three other top wedding bloggers as well as three top wedding photographers.
I have two more workshops on calendar for 2014 – as well as some projects to be announced – all to help photographers make sense of the sometimes confusing process of submitting, and more importantly, getting accepted for feature by the publication of their dreams.
Today I thought I'd go over a part of the "Getting Published" process – the actual submission.
While some may think having beautiful photography would simply be "enough" to get published, such is not the case. Yes, providing an editor with outstanding photography is more than important – there are lots of other details that go into deciding whether a submission will be featured. One of the most important factors is whether the photographer has provided enough information about the wedding or shoot.
Jose Villa
Let me preface this by saying – if you have submitted a wedding or shoot to Fab You Bliss recently and I am working with you on obtaining more information, please don't feel like I'm singling you out. This missing step is a common occurrence – one that happens more times than we editors would like – which is why we offer the workshops we do and write posts such as this to help educate photographers. So don't worry, you're not alone.
What I'm hoping to do with this post is provide you with the information you need to combine your fantastic photography skills with the BEST submission techniques so you can WOW even the most critical editor.
Benjamin and Elise Photography via Magnolia Rouge
One of the easiest ways for you to make sure your submission goes from "maybe" to an absolute "yes" is to provide the name and website of every vendor who worked on the wedding. I can't tell you how many times I've been really excited about a gorgeous wedding only to find not one vendor listed. Seriously, this happens a lot!
Let's just assume when this happens it is an oversight and the photographers don't know that editors need such information. So now you know you need to…
# 1. Provide a list of all vendors who worked on the wedding or shoot. This includes all bridal party attire, especially the bride and groom's.
It would be plain silly for any editor to feature an image of a gorgeous dress, shoes, etc., yet not provide the information for our readers to find it for themselves. In addition, the vendors who worked to help create the wedding or shoot deserve to get credit and a spotlight as well. So be sure to make their information available in your submission so editors don't have to ask for it – or worse, so you don't get rejected because it's not there.
Chaviano Couture
# 2. If the vendor has a website, please provide it.
You'd think that # 1 and # 2 here are saying the same thing. But they're not. What I'm saying in #2 is this: Let's say Beautiful Flowers is the name of the florist who provided all of the flowers for the wedding you are submitting. Obviously you know the name of the company. And you've also provided their email address. JohnDoe@BeautifulFlowers.com. But what you haven't provided is their website address.
Did you know that if John Doe has @BeautifulFlowers.com as their email address it's 99% likely that http://beautifulflowers.com is their website. And even if it isn't, you should take the time to find out what it is and provide the correct information to the editor of wherever you are submitting. I will say this, if an editor has to go look for contact information, your submission goes from "absolutely yes" to "well, maybe" in seconds flat. I don't mean to be blunt, but we have a lot of submissions to you choose from. So make sure yours stands out among the rest!
# 3. Please do not refer us to your blog post for information.
Respect is a huge part of getting your work published. Unfortunately, too few people recognize this. Maybe it's because many photographers don't realize how many submissions we go through. Maybe it's because they don't realize how disrespectful it sounds to send us searching somewhere else for the information that should be provided within the submission itself. Either way, don't let this happen to you. If you really want to impress an editor, carefully read through their submissions guidelines and provide everything they ask for and then some. And be sure to follow this for EVERY publication you submit to, no matter how big or small they are.
Emm and Clau Photography via French Wedding Style
# 4. If the couple has information on the wedding, please provide it with the submission..
There have been plenty of times where I've viewed a submission that is leaning towards the "maybe" feature, but as soon as I read the lovely, amazing or sweet story the couple provided – it instantly becomes an absolute "yes". The more information you can provide for us editors, the easier it makes it for us to accept it. It really is as simple as that.
The bottom line is this, it's important to remember it's not only your beautiful imagery that will make or break your submission. Lots of information needs to come along with your images – the more the better and the easier you make it for the editor to accept – and the more you'll get featured.
Also, be sure to give the same extraordinary submission effort for every publication you submit to. The way you submit should be the same for a blog that receives 10,000 visitors a month to one that receives a million. The reason I say this is because, one – you are a professional and you should treat everyone with the same professional courtesy. And two – you never know, that blog that receives 10,000 visitors a month today could be the blog that receives over a million visitors next year. And wouldn't it suck to have burned a bridge with them?
So remember – the key with getting your submissions accepted is to provide exactly what the publication is looking for. Think like an editor. Put yourself in their shoes and imagine what they are looking for. If you can do that and satisfy that need – you'll be published every time!
Thanks for stopping by!

Does Thomas Mathew mean Delhi Municipality or Dubai Municipality or Damn Moron?

Everyone in Keralites group would be eager to know this great peace of information!

Dear Mr.  Jaras  or what ever your name is

I took some time to understand what you wanted to say due to the faulty language. Your comments about my political support is unwarranted. You have the right to argue your side  but not personal attack on any one.  For your information, there is no known Supreme Court Advocate by name Sasi Bhushan. The only Sasi Bhushan who was famous was a congress leader of Delhi, who died 20 years back. It is a pity that the supporter of Achuthandan  does not know even the spelling of Chandi, the DM.

If I say that Achunandan has support from semi-literates like you what will you feel. So please refrain from making personal attacks.

Mr.TM is a blind supportter of congress, his ears are close on spectram, saritha, illeagal gold buisiness etc. Even Mr Achuthanandan is below 10Std, he is better than those correpted leaders. And he have good support from famous supreme courts advocates, prasanth bushion,
sasi bushion and ramjethmalani etc. Fight against correption even he not get support from his political party. He is 100% better than chadi &joppan ,saeem raj company.

Mr. TM
The suggetion is to prescribe a minimum qualification that since the criteria for all Jobs both in Govt Pvt sector. No hard and fast rule Achuthanandan should be the cm. If he does not become the Cm the kerala will not immerse in Arabian sea. Incidentaly why you point out he alone pls as if all the other MLAs are +10. Any Anandan can be the cm if he/she has the prescibed qualification to contest /win/ their party get the majority and they are are nominated to CMs post

Time and again you tend to read what is not meant or written( EZUTHAPPURAM VAYIKKALLE SAARE!)

And what does these monkeys do? They search for opportunities for some lucrative scams and in case of customs and excise dig for information on how to either fleece the employees or loot others. Bah ! our "democrazy" has made such abhorrent things happen. Peoples Representation Act should be completely re-written and only meritorious and educated (not those money paid degrees from some unknown universities) must be allowed to contest election. More women to be elected since they will reduce corruption and no reservation – only merit should be allowed.

Sir,
how about a minimum educational qualification for a class 4 in Govt office I think it is 8th std pass or now 10th pass. But to become MLA or Mp no educational qualification necessary. Any donky can become. And the top of it I have seen these bunch of JHONYS coming to Custom N Central excise offices as PARLIAMENOTRY COMMITTEE. The IRS officers will be on their toes till such time these monkeys leave. The whole day the dept cannot work.

What a pity condition we are facing, and where are we proceeding to? What wrong we have done to face all these? Is it the common man's mistake for this condition? We saw that these so called parlamentarians cant safeguard us. This is the time when an AVATHAARAM comes and save us. Let us all join together and pray for that avathaaram. God, Save us.

[www.keralites.net] Tricks to Set Your Mindset for Success:

Want to reach your goals more quickly? Set your mindset for success with these tricks.

We all want a successful happy life. You are probably like me and have many goals you want to achieve. Whether these goals are for business, home, family, or self-improvement, setting your mindset for success is key.

Without a proper mindset you may find yourself distracted by daily life or experiencing shiny object syndrome. Shiny object syndrome is when you are always distracted by the latest and greatest idea, so you rarely follow one path through to the end.

You may have decided you have all the time in the world to reach these goals. Will you feel the same way in 5 years if you havent reached them yet? If you look back 5 years, what did you plan to achieve at that time? Have you achieved those goals? Why or why not?

If you set your mindset for success, you will reach your goals more quickly and will then find yourself with the opportunity to create new, and possibly even bigger, goals.

Develop Success Habits
  1. Create systems to keep yourself on track.

  2. Make a small step toward each of your goals each day.

  3. Capture all of the information that could help you.

  4.
  5. Take a quick note on your phone while you are out for a walk so you dont forget.

  6. Clip all articles and inspiring ideas for later reference.

  7.
  8. Create the to-do list for the next day the night before.

  9. Prioritize your to do list.

  10. Tackle the most dreaded task first, as everything else will feel like a piece of cake after.

Once youve implemented one or more of the above success habits for over 21 days, it will become much easier and a part of your routine. At that time, you can add in another mindset for success. Feel free to try implementing them all at once, but for most people, that much change to their routine is overwhelming and they are dooming themselves to failure.

Make Better Decisions

  1. Start making executive decisions you are the CEO of your own life, so begin taking charge and making decisions as if you were being paid for those decisions.

  2. Apply mental filters.

  3. Run decisions through an if this, then that scenario in your mind.

  4. Consider the worst case scenario.

  5. Keep your end goal in mind. Does the choice fit with your goal or take you in a different direction?

  6. Distance your emotions if they are really strong. A gut reaction is great, but take a step back if one of the choices really engages an emotional response in you. Come back to make the decision when you can be a bit more objective.

  7. Learn from your failures by asking yourself what you learned from the experience.

  8. Stop the negative talk in your mind.

  9. Know your strengths and weaknesses.

  10. Ask for feedback from colleagues.

  11. Be able to process both positive and negative feedback in a constructive manner.

  12. Learn how to correct yourself when you find yourself going too far or not keeping in line with your goal.

  13. Develop core competencies that will help you reach your goal.

  14. Be results-focused.

  15. When you experience a setback, dont dwell on it. After doing an assessment, move on to the next thing.

  16. Dont be afraid to make a course correction when necessary

  17. Stick with your decisions in most cases; constant course correction makes the road 10 times as long.

Decision-making is a huge key to success. We make many decisions each day, and they either take us closer or farther away from our goals. Do you know what effects your decisions are having on your goals? Spend a few minutes thinking about the last few decisions youve made and decide whether they are in line with your goals or taking you farther away from them.

Which mindset for success tricks can you put in practice today? Share your best success habits with us in the comments below.source; LifeHack

[www.keralites.net] 5 Simple Ways to Overcome Procrastination

Procrastination may result instress, a sense ofguiltandcrisis, severe loss of personalproductivity, as well as social disapproval for not meeting responsibilities or commitments.

"How soon 'not now' becomes 'never'."
Martin Luther
"A year from now you may wish you had started today."
Karen Lamb
Procrastination is probably one of the most common problems people have in their day to day life. So find a procrastination solution that works for you.
Here are five of them. Try them out and see which one or ones that fit you the best.
1. Do the hardest thing first.
What this means is simply to do the hardest and most important task of the day first thing in the morning. A good start in the morning lifts your spirits and creates a positive momentum for the rest of the day. That often creates a pretty productive day.
2. How do you eat an elephant?
Don't try to take it all in one big bite. It becomes overwhelming which leads to procrastination. Split a task into small actionable steps. Then just focus on the first step and nothing else. Just do that one until it's done. Then move on to the next step.
3. Recognize that there is more pain in procrastinating than not.
If you have procrastinated a lot you might have discovered that you procrastinate to avoid doing something that is boring, hard etc. You want to avoid that pain. But after having some experience with procrastination you'll probably realise that procrastination itself causes your more pain than actually just doing what you were supposed to. Realising the true amount of pain in the two choices will make it easier to get things done.
4. Make a small deal with yourself.
Promise yourself that you'll work on something for just 5 minutes. After those 5 minutes you can do something else if you want to. But make a note in your schedule for when you will come back to the task and work another 5 minutes on it. No matter how unpleasant a task may be, you can often talk yourself into working 5 minutes on it.
I've found this one to be effective to make a dent in those tasks you have put off for a longer while. Because many times you will just continue working after those 5 minutes have passed. It is the first few minutes of getting started that is the hardest part.
5. Use my three step method for doing something even when you don't feel like it.
Mundane or routine tasks can be a bit boring. Maybe you have a lot or emails to reply to or phone calls to make. Batch them - do them all in row - to get them done quicker.
If you feel inner resistance and just can't get started try this three step method to be able to reduce that resistance, up your motivation and get going.
Step 1: Accept it.
When you feel resistance within towards doing something the natural instinct may be to try to push that feeling away. To brush it off. I have found that doing the opposite and just accepting that it is there can do wonders.

Tell yourself: "This is how I feel right now and I accept it".
This sounds counterintuitive and perhaps like you're giving up. However by accepting how you feel instead of resisting it you reduce the emotional energy that you are feeding into this problem. It then tends to just kinda lose speed like a car that runs out of fuel. And oftentimes it becomes so weak after while that it moves out of your inner focus and disappears.
This step may be all you need to reduce the negative feelings enough to be able to start taking action. If not, move on to the next step.
Step 2: List the positives.
After you have accepted how you feel list the positives of getting this thing done. Do it on paper, on your computer or just in your head.
When you don't feel like doing something it's very easy to get stuck and just focus on the negative aspects such as it being hard work or the risk of pain or failure.
So you need to change what you are focusing on to motivate yourself to take action. Making a list of positives like benefits and possible opportunities can be very effective for turning your focus around.
If you have problems getting started ask yourself questions that will empower you. Questions like:
- What is awesome about this situation?
- What is the hidden opportunity in this situation?
You can pretty much always find positives about anything. There are lessons to be learned about yourself and your world and opportunities to be found if you look at things the right way.
Step 3: Just do it.
You should now have reduced much of the resistance within and feel more motivated to start taking action and getting your thing done
It is at this point tempting to start thinking again. To reconsider and ponder. But I have found that if you do that then it easy to fall back into the same place where you began. You start to question doing this. Your focus starts to turn back to the negative aspects again.
So when I am at this point I usually just stop thinking and get my butt out of the chair. I get moving and I just do it.
