Re: [www.keralites.net]

Sir,
iam not a Govt servant though I had an offer as back as in 1972 to join. Instead I joined pvt Service,Logistics.  For the last 9 years  Iam a Management consultant and hence I have enough experience with Customs & Central Excise.
I can quote any number of examples of honest officers victimsed. You have heard of an IAS officer Mr NarayanaSwamy in our GOD's OWN COUNTRY. Another victim and we have many more. Officers should stand erect S, It is easly said Than done.

Sir, When Kennedy was the president of USA, he visited a school . While mingling with  elementory school children he asked one of the boys. What do you want to become in your life. Pat came the answer. Sir, I want to become President of USA like you. Kennedy blessed him and said S> U WILL BECOME ONE DAY>
Mind you that boy was Mr. Clinton.

Now think . Iam in Chennai and if my son tell Mr Karunanidhi that he likes to be the CM of Tamil Nadfu. That will be end of my Family. This is the situation we are. I dont resign to my fate or to the situation. We cannot wait. Let us start with this General Election pls.

Hi,
I said almost all and not all.  People have to stand up to such assaults.  It has happened to me and mercifully I was not a Govt. Officer.  What happened to
that Lady, she became Chennai Commisioner isn't it inspite of the transfer order.  So, honest officers will always stand up.  The corrupt ones will not and
cannot but can only curry favour. By saying this is the condition you have resigned to the fate.  Are you also a Govt. Officer.  I have a strong feeling you are one.
Please see also my last sentence in my mail.

Mr. N.R,
Like in any Govt Dept there are in Customs too corrupt officials. But Not all the Customs officials are corrupt.
In 1992/93 one lady IRS officer  who was in charge of Chennai Airport when on duty, One MP and his PA came
to Airport to take his flight to Delhi. As per the protocol she received him put him in VIP room and kept a P>O.( Preventive officer) to attend. Since She has to attend an international flight she went for that. The MP N His PA insisted her presence till their departure but she politely refused sighting the arrival of an international flight. The PA spoke in bad language and within 5 to 6 hrs of their landing in Delhi the Commissioner of Customs chennai received a fax message. It was her transfer to central excise the next day. She was carrying 5 months( Pregnent). she is an honest officer and today she is the Commissioner of Customs Chennai.
This is the reason the IRS many a time crawl and not they have   anything to hide.
Why, In chennai I have seen boys of 20 + telling the police that he is the son of a counciller or an MLA and the police let him go. for the Police know that what will be his fate if he is strict. This is the condition prevailing in our country today.

Hi, Hello,

Why IRS Officers should be on their toes.  That means they have something to hide.  In any case almost all the Customs and Central Excise staff  from bottom to top are corrupt and they only know to harass ordinary people.  They put up a brave front in front of them. You should see them crawling in front of their superiors and
the high and mighty.  Same goes for all the Govt. people.  This trend must be arrested.  It can only be done by Govt. staff themselves.

Afghanistan worst place in the world for women, but India in top five

Targeted violence against female public officials, dismal healthcare and desperate poverty make Afghanistan the world's most dangerous country in which to be born a woman, according to a global survey released on Wednesday.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), India andSomalia feature in descending order after Afghanistan in the list of the five worst states, the poll among gender experts shows.
The appearance of India, a country rapidly developing into an economic super-power, was unexpected. It is ranked as extremely hazardous because of the subcontinent's high level of female infanticide and sex trafficking.
Others were less surprised to be on the list. Informed about her country's inclusion, Somalia's women's minister, Maryan Qasim, responded: "I thought Somalia would be first on the list, not fifth."
The survey has been compiled by the Thomson Reuters Foundation to mark the launch of a website, TrustLaw Woman, aimed at providing free legal advice for women's groups around the world.
High maternal mortality rates, limited access to doctors and a "near total lack of economic rights" render Afghanistan such a threat to its female inhabitants. "Continuing conflict, Nato airstrikes and cultural practices combine to make Afghanistan a very dangerous place for women," said Antonella Notari, head of Women Change Makers, a group that supports women social entrepreneurs around the world.
"Women who do attempt to speak out or take on public roles that challenge ingrained gender stereotypes of what is acceptable for women to do or not, such as working as policewomen or news broadcasters, are often intimidated or killed."
The "staggering levels of sexual violence" in the lawless east of the DRC account for its second place in the list. One recent US study claimed that more than 400,000 women are raped there each year. The UN has called Congo the rape capital of the world.
"Rights activists say militia groups and soldiers target all ages, including girls as young as three and elderly women," the survey reports, "They are gang raped, raped with bayonets and some have guns shot into their vaginas."
Divya Bajpai, reproductive health adviser at the International HIV/Aids Alliance,

India is the fourth most dangerous country. "India's central bureau of investigation estimated that in 2009 about 90% of trafficking took place within the country and that there were some 3 million prostitutes, of which about 40% were children," the survey found.
Forced marriage and forced labour trafficking add to the dangers for women. "Up to 50 million girls are thought to be 'missing' over the past century due to female infanticide and foeticide,", the UN population fund says, because parents prefer to have young boys rather than girls.
Somalia, a state in political disintegration, suffers high levels of maternal mortality, rape, female genital mutilation and limited access to education and healthcare.
Qasim added: "The most dangerous thing a woman in Somalia can do is to become pregnant. When a woman becomes pregnant her life is 50-50 because there is no antenatal care at all. There are no hospitals, no healthcare, no nothing.
"Add to that the rape cases that happen on a daily basis, and female genital mutilation being done to every single girl in Somalia. Add to that famine and drought. Add to that the fighting [which means] you can die any minute, any day."
Monique Villa, the chief executive of the Thomson Reuters Foundation, said: "Hidden dangers â€" like a lack of education or terrible access to healthcare â€" are as deadly, if not more so, than physical dangers like rape and murder which usually grab the headlines.
"In Afghanistan, for instance, women have a one in 11 chance of dying in childbirth. In the top five countries, basic human rights are systematically denied to women.
"Empowering women tackles the very roots of poverty. In the developing world when a woman works, her children are better fed and better educated because they spend their money for their family."
The survey was based on responses from more than 200 aid professionals, academics, health workers, policymakers, journalists and development specialists chosen for their expertise in gender issues.
Each country was also ranked in terms of six risk factors including: health, discrimination and lack of access to resources, cultural and religious practices, sexual violence, human trafficking and conflict-related violence.
In terms of individual risk categories, Afghanistan was deemed to be the most dangerous for health, economic/discrimination and non-sexual violence; the Congo is most plagued by rape and sexual violence; and India has most problems with trafficking.
"You have to look at all the dangers to women, all the risks women and girls face," said Elisabeth Roesch, who works on gender-based violence for the International Rescue Committee in Washington.
"If a woman can't access healthcare because her healthcare isn't prioritised, that can be a very dangerous situation as well."
The TrustLaw website has been in existence for some time, linking up local NGOs and social entrepreneurs with established law firms who are prepared to offer legal advice on a pro-bono basis. The groups are vetted by Transparency International.
More than 450 law firms are already involved including some from China. Among those that have recently benefited have been the charity Riders for Health, which delivers medicine to remote villages, and reviewed its contracts in Nigeria.

Re: [www.keralites.net]

Governance is all about vision, will and integrity. Formal education can improve the communication skills like English or French, nothing more than that. Otherwise universities would have started very lucrative courses like certified chief minister graduation or prime minister graduation. Also no successful ruler directly involve in ground level execution of their vision as it would be highly technical at that level, but they show the will to manage it at a macro level and materialize it at any cost. Their unquestionable integrity will scare others to do any corruption. In India, we have a very smart IAS cadre to do the micro management. Consultancy is another way to make proper blue print of unclear visions.

So what we discuss here is only a myth. Unfortunately we have leaders lacking vision, will and integrity or anyone among this combination.

Highly politically polarized people are misusing this myth just to tarnish their opponents. Better ask whether that leader has better vision and better integrity than this leader or not.

Mr. TM
The suggetion is to prescribe a minimum qualification that since the criteria for all Jobs both in Govt & Pvt sector. No hard and fast rule Achuthanandan should be the cm. If he does not become the Cm the kerala will not immerse in Arabian sea. Incidentaly why you point out he alone pls as if all the other MLAs are +10. Any Anandan can be the cm if he/she has the prescibed qualification to contest /win/ their party get the majority and they are are nominated to CMs post

And what does these monkeys do? They search for opportunities for some lucrative scams and in case of customs and excise dig for information on how to either fleece the employees or loot others. Bah ! our "democrazy" has made such abhorrent things happen. Peoples Representation Act should be completely re-written and only meritorious and educated (not those money paid degrees from some unknown universities) must be allowed to contest election. More women to be elected since they will reduce corruption and no reservation – only merit should be allowed.
