[www.keralites.net] How to stop the Rupee slide: some brilliant solutions..

How to lift the Rupee from its dumps..

Every news channel, every newspaper, every economist worth his/her salt has a panacea to stop the rupee tailspin and bring back some sanity. All, either shooting in the dark or vague, wishy-washy solutions – the TOI, the "world's largest paper", so the high priest of journalism grandly recently wrote the country needs 'structural changes" without pinpointing what they are.

Amidst all these cacophony, only HT's Chanakya (Sunday, 25/8/13) gives concrete steps that, to one, seem to work…

"This situation calls for a change in script. What we need are big bang measure that take effect immediately – as opposed to stpes that will begin to bear fruit six months later – to lift sentiment. Traditional monetary measures have failed and incremental steps to stop dollar outflows have proved counter-productive.

First, ban gold and silver imports (for, say, six to nine months). This will tell the world that India is serious about addressing its current account deficit problem. (Me: Gold import now attracts custom duty at about 30%. This won't work, given an average Indian's appetite for gold regardless of its price. By banning imports, the price in the country may further escalate. So what? Let the Indians be ready pay for it)

Raise petrol and diesel prices by Rs.4-5 per litre to help the government to pare its deficit.

Set aside $25-30 billion from India's foreign exchange reserves to defend the rupee against speculators. (Me: This is a suggestion put forward by Montek Ahluwalia, the Dy. Planning Commission Chairman).

Settle the Vodafone tax case to signal to the world that their investments here will not be subject to whimsical and politically-motivated policy changes. (Me: absolutely spot-on. The proposal to tax Vodafone billions of dollars on their acquisition of the then cellphone brand, Hutch, from the Hongkong-based company was the single most important factor that stopped MNCs in their tracks from making further investments in the country. Our policy makers and/or the tax sleuths are singularly myopic)

Force real estate companies to cut prices to make housing affordable. This sector has linkages with more than 200 industries. And if it revives, it will set off a virtuous cycle by generating demand in hundreds of feeder industries. (Me: the real-estate companies have been exceedingly greedy and been jacking up prices every two months so much so flats have become unaffordable to middle-class buyers.)

(Me: All one can say is, Wah! Wah!!)

[www.keralites.net] The 7 Qualities of Holy Spirits

Everyone now a days is craving for peace of mind through monetary achievements approach however what people don't understand is that materialistic achievements provide temporary happiness but not the long lasting state of abundance. On the contrary, a person possessing a holy spirit regardless of being poor or rich can have the great contentment state of mind. You may think that practicing the qualities of holy spirit is not an easy job and only special people can develop and practice such traits, I would disagree with you. You must remember that all people are born with the same principles of nature (including you) however successful and peaceful people are those who have the tendency to learn things which are good for their body, heart and soul !!! Having said that, below are the 8 qualities which you must strive for in order to join the league of Holy Spirits and enjoy the ultimate mental and spiritual happiness:

1- Holy Spirits lack in the ability to conflict, complain, curse, conspire and criticise. (More details about 6Cs can be read here.) They mind their own business. They have least tendency of discussing people. They believe in the fact that small minds discuss people, average minds discuss events, higher minds discuss ideas and great minds act in silence.

2- They are implosive and optimistic with solid control on their mood swings. They are highly adaptable and resilient to most of the stretched circumstances by having strong control on their negative thoughts.

3- They believe that nothing else but others will remember them on how they made them feel. Hence they are empathic and emotionally intelligent in judging others situations and feelings in order to resolve their crisis to make them feel good. They have frequent attacks of smiling and laughter to keep others happy.

4- They enjoy the present, forget the past and don't get worried too much about the future. They have a great tendency of living in needs instead of wants hence they have absence of greed in their nature.

5- They believe that being thankful is the open door to abundance hence they possess high degree of gratitude. The spiritual people keep reminding themselves that what if they woke up next day with the only blessings they were thankful for yesterday. The Feeling of gratitude strengthens the degree of contentment. They remember the quote "When Your Head is on the Pillow and the Day is Almost Done – Count God's blessings, Count Them One by One"

6- They believe in simplicity instead of being socially sensitive. They understand that its perfectly alright not to follow each fashion trend or buy a new luxury car which their friends have because comparing themselves with others is an insulting act. Also pleasing everybody will never bring long lasting peace in their lives.

7- They listen more and speak less. If they speak, they speak what is positive, important or beneficial for others. They know that when a person speaks more he/she is on the verge of making more mistakes hence spiritually strong people listen more and speak less.

While it may take time to develop these habits however once you make concrete commit with yourself for the pursuit of happiness through practicing these qualities, the journey would become much easier and the fruits of your efforts would be very sweet and long lasting.

[www.keralites.net] Professional Advice: Seven Cover Letter Don'ts

When you meet someone new, what is the first thing you notice about them? Maybe you notice a nice smile, a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes, or beautiful brown eyes.

Now imagine someone has a piece of spinach between his teeth, toilet paper stuck to his shoe, or is avoiding eye contact.

While these may not be the kinds of things you'd hold against someone, an employer may not be as forgiving if her first impression is not a good one. Before an employer sees your résumé or meets you in person, they begin forming an impression about you from your cover letter.

Here's a sample that includes mistakes we've seen in actual cover letters:

Dear Sirs: I saw you're ad. This is the kind of job I've been looking for. I'm pretty sure I would enjoy it and it would be good experience for me. I've already sent out a bunch of résumés without much luck so I hope you'll hire me. As you can see I have everything your looking for. Its you're loss if you don't hire me. Call me at 555-1234.
Andy Applicant

You can learn from "Andy's" mistakes by avoiding the following don'ts in your own cover letters:

1. Don't address the letter "Dear Sirs". The person reading your letter may be a woman who won't be impressed with this salutation. Instead, find out the name of the person who will be reviewing your résumé by contacting the company's human resources department, or address your letter "Attention: Human Resources Department" if they won't give you a name.

2. Don't forget to say which position you are applying for. Many companies advertise more than one position at a time.

3. Don't send a cover letter that has not been thoroughly proofread. Typographical and grammatical errors (such as confusing "you're" with "your") create a poor impression.

4. Don't focus on what you want. In this case the applicant said he thought he'd enjoy the job and get experience. Focus instead on what value you can bring to the employer, such as increasing revenues or cutting costs.

5. Don't send a generic letter. You can make a much better impression by mentioning the company name and doing a little research so you can say something flattering about the company. You can learn what companies pride themselves on, including their products and achievements, by checking their Web sites.

6. Don't appear desperate. Avoid comments such as "I've already sent out a bunch of résumés without much luck." Employers may wonder if there's a good reason why no one else has hired you.

7. Don't challenge them to hire you. Employers will be turned off if you say something like "It's your loss if you don't hire me." Instead, show them, with examples of your accomplishments, why you would be an asset to their company.

Remember, to leave a good impression, treat your cover letter as if it were the first meeting with your potential employer. Not many employers will give you a second chance (i.e. an interview) if you leave them with a bad first impression. So, make your cover letter count, even if you have some leftover lunch stuck between your teeth while you are writing it.
