[www.keralites.net] a story for you..

Don't wait for the parrot to die

The story is told of a woman who bought a parrot to keep her company, but she returned it the next day (from sudhir nair).
"This bird doesn't talk," she told the owner. "Does he have a mirror in his cage?" he asked.
"Parrots love mirrors. They see their reflection and start a conversation."
The woman bought a mirror and left.
The next day she returned; the bird still wasn't talking.
"How about a ladder? Parrots love ladders.
The happy parrot is a talkative parrot." The woman bought a ladder and left.
But the next day, she was back. "Does your parrot have a swing?
No? Well, that's the problem.
Once he starts swinging, he'll talk up a storm."
The woman reluctantly bought a swing and left.
When she walked into the store the next day, her countenance had changed.
"The parrot died," she said. The pet store owner was shocked.
"I'm so sorry. Tell me, did he ever say anything?" he asked.
"Yes, right before he died," the woman replied.
"In a weak voice, he asked me, 'Don't they sell any food at that pet store?'"
Sometimes we forget what's really important in life.
We get so caught up in things that are good while neglecting the things that are truly necessary.
We've got to provide the family with a nice house.
And of course, we've got to have at least two cars.
And to make everybody truly happy, we need the latest smart phone.
But, if we're not careful, we'll make the mistake of thinking those (and many other such "things")
are the things that bring us satisfaction and meaning.
The prophet Haggai had a lot to say about priorities.
The Jews were spending plenty of time and energy taking care of their own needs, building their own houses,
planting their own fields, but they were neglecting the things of God.
They were too "busy" for God, but the things that were keeping them busy were not things which should have been of highest priority.
"Is it time for you yourselves to live in your paneled houses, and this temple to lie in ruins?" (Haggai 1:4).
We can easily determine what our true priorities are by looking at
(1) what we spend our money on,
(2) what we spend our time doing, and
(3) what we talk about.
Jesus said, "The thing you should want most is God's kingdom and doing what God wants.
Then all these other things you need will be given to you." Take a moment to do a "priority check", and strive for what is *most* important today.
Don't wait for the parrot to die!

[www.keralites.net] Khatte-mitten khabhrain from around the world for 12/8/13

The 100-metre run is the shortest sprint in mega events and gets over in less than 10 seconds; usually the eight finalists having taken their spot through tough earlier rounds and semi-finals are the finest with the best timings and more often, with all of them reaching the finishing line almost at the same time with only one- or two-hundreds of a second separating them the spectators could never really make out who won the race and had to wait for the photo-finish confirmation for the outcome. Even when the redouble Carl Lewis reigning supreme, he was only slightly ahead of the pack

However, Bolt is amazing because he always wins with over a metre ahead of the nearest rival. In the last night race, Gatlin was ahead with a fabulous start, and sprinting smoothly; Bolt, usually a slow-starter, maybe erring on the side of safety after his infamous exist at the last World Athletics due to a false start, caught up with him at the 50 or 60-metre mark and surge ahead, winning easily.

Looks, Bolt will remain the greatest sprinter ever.

Architecture of holy shrines: churches vs. temples.

One may say comparisons are odious… but..

My huge collection has one album on some fine churches around and another on the finest n best of temples around the world. Friends, have a look at them purely with an eye on aesthetics. Each of the churches, at least a large majority of them, has a different kind of architecture and the insides are wonderfully illuminated by stained glasses etched with myriad images and designs in multi-hues, whereas almost all Hindu temples are alike: the south Indian ones have a gopuram or tower with pyramid-like slope – with myriad garishly coloured, almost unsightly, figurines on their external faces

And the conclusion would be inescapable…

Weird world…

Religious family abandons US, gets lost at sea..

Phoenix: An Arizona family was lost at sea for weeks in an ill-fated attempt to leave the US over what they consider government interference in religion. Hannah G, 26, said on Saturday that their family 'decided to take a leap of faith and see where God let us" when they set sail from San Deigo for the tiny island nation of Kiritbati in May. But just weeks into their journey, the Gastonguays were hit by a series of storms that damaged their small boat, leaving them adrift for weeks, unable to make progress. They were eventually picked up by a Venezuelan fishing vessel, transferred to a Japanese cargo ship and taken to Chile. Their flights home have been arranged by US Embassy officials.

(Me: Nearer home, entire temples, including idols, were washed away in torrential rains. You may be a faithful, but do take necessary precautions, and not leave things to Him above..)

Swedish swimmers warned of testicle-biting fish

Stockholm: Swedish men are being warned against any inclination for nude swimming after a new species of fish known for attacking testicles was discovered in their waters. The freshwater fish are mostly found in the Amazon and are known as 'ball cutters." Fish expert Henrick Carl said pacu bite when they are hungry and 'testicles sit nicely in their not so big mouth".

What are the best foods for controlling appetite?

Fermentable carbohydrate foods like oats, Jerusalem artichokes, mushrooms, asparagus, bananas and onions are broken down or fermented, by the bacteria in the colon, forming short-chain fatty acids that in turn produce hormones that control appetite.

Laser 'death test' predicts how long you have left to live…

London: Scientists have designed a non-invasive test called the death test – the first of its kind in the world which can tell people how long they have left to live. A painless laser pulse is applied to the surface of the skin through a wristwatch-style device. This measures how a person's body will decline with age by analyzing endothelial cells.

(Me: Pray, whoever wants to know and then live in constant fear? Yes, everyone has to depart some day, but no one would to know the exactly 'when')

Three men are fishing in a resort. One says, "I had a terrible fire, lost everything. But the insurance company is paying for everything and that's why I'm here."

The second man says, "I had a terrible explosion, lost everything. Insurance is helping, so I' here."

The third guy says, "What a coincidence. I had a terrible flood, lost everything. The insurance firm is bailing me out too and that's why I'm here."

According to a TOI special report today, Nehru, Patel and Ambedkar were against the creation of states in the country on linguistic basis, while Gandhi was for it..

The others turn to him confused and ask, "Flood? How did you start a flood?"
