(Me: One would submit that the mother of 99% of our countries problems was the division of India and creation of states on linguistic basis. The political satraps in respective states saw to it that parochialism and regionalism took strong, intractable roots in them; e.g TN cannot see eye to eye either with Kerala or Karnataka and vice versa, the river disputes among them have become irreconcilable; the root cause of the son's-of-the-soil demand also rests there. The problems squire lay with our general populace: we are an emotional and sentimental old fools; their passions of course incited, ignited by interested local politicians. The government at the centre and at the states always buckle under local pressure or naked blackmail, even in very serious cases like hi-jacking and hostage-taking. Once people anywhere in the country have realized that the government can be blackmailed into submission, there has been and there is no end to these kinds of wholly unwarranted demands.
For, smaller states do not necessarily – and never – make for good or effective government – effective government is one where the tax-payers' money is efficiently used for development work to improve the lot of the common man. Alas, in our country, more numbers of states which is what smaller states leads to, mean larger numbers of politicians getting elected to the state assemblies or local bodies and many of them, bagging ministerial berths with the attendant fishes and loaves office, and to adding more numbers in bureaucracy from the chief secretary of the state down to the lowly chaprasi, all of them eating into tax-payers' money, besides they rake in commissions on every contract awarded.
Sadly, the politicians at the time of our Independence were not visionaries and didn't see the bad shape of things to come – if they were, they would have had the foresight given our watertight caste system)
