[www.keralites.net] The 8 Ps of Vision and Strategy

Vision is one of the most critical traits of current and emerging leaders because strong vision results establishing better strategy to ensure success.
In its basic definition, the vision is to see (visualize) the future at present moment and then aligning the strategies including but not limited to policies, procedures and action plans in order to ensure success without any setbacks.

Below 8 Ps elaborate the concept of Vision and Strategy altogether:

1. Picking the Right Battle: Effective leaders ponder well enough to chose the right course of direction (the mission) which can lead them towards success with higher success probability and greater efficiency. This does not means that they select easy targets instead sometimes they select more challenging grounds with their gut feeling of success. However they are careful in making their choices because of being the captain of the boat. If the leader succeeds, the boat sails; if leader drowns the whole boat gets collapsed.
2. Perspective: How a leader sees the future is very sensitive matter. No matter how genius team members he/she possesses; his own vision is highly important. It is said that an army of dears lead by a lion is far better than any army of lions lead by a dear. The leader's vision depends on the level of mental comprehension of industry, current statistics, near future and long term forecasts/trends, overall knowledge and experience of associated domains, a lot of study and observation about market and expectation of stake holders. More articles on leadership can be read at www. DailyTenMinutes dot com
3. Present Position: The leader must define the baseline because this will be the reference to be compared when measuring performance and progress at later stage. The visionary leader must clearly define the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs); the current values of KPIs, bench marking in line with industry standards, the measurement criteria and measurement frequency.
4. Policies and Procedures: The review of current and finalization of policies for concrete results should be done prior to kick off the execution phase. Yet a leader should be smart enough to closely monitor and tweak the policies and procedures in case something is putting the projects/programs in jeopardy. The market dynamics demands consistent focus and a lot of iterations in companies' strategies.
5. Plans: Failing to plan is planning to fail. The leader would define high level goals; the goals which are SMART (Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Realistic, Time bound) Once defined, the leader assigns these to the team of managers which in turn use the RACI model for further low level implementation. (RACI tool is used for defining Responsibility Matrix; RACI stands for Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, Informed respectively)
6. Pattern: Although Low level micro tasks is not a specific leaders' responsibility but it becomes very effective if leaders take active part few times during the life cycle of the project; especially when WBS (work breakdown structures) are prepared by the associated Project Managers. Sometimes his/her vision and experience can make big difference when reviewing WBS with the PM.
7. Progress Performance: Consistent progress and performance measurement against the baseline must be ensured by the leaders. This also requires risk identification, risk analysis and risk mitigation. The project becomes orphans if the leader does not review its performance periodically.
8. Power Plug: Last but not the least, he becomes the consistent source of inspiration, fuel and energy for his team members. By this act he ensure that the 'batteries' (employee's working potential) are charged throughout the life cycle of the project.

[www.keralites.net] Controllable Electronic Load Circuit for DC Power Supply

Controllable Electronic Load Circuit for DC Power Supply
If you are interested in testing voltage-regulated power supplies under loaded conditions, here is a simple electronic load circuit controllable from a single 2-12V, 200mA power supply. The variable power supply is generated from regulator LM317.

This electronic load circuit, using a parallel combination of power transistors T3 and T4 (2N3773) mounted on a large-area heat-sink, can be used for testing any DC power supply in the range of 2 to 50 volts capable of delivering up to 10A current. You can increase the current limit to 20 amps by adding two more 2N3773 power transistors (not shown in the circuit) in parallel, mounted on a suitable heat-sink, without making any change in the controllable drive circuit.

This test circuit has two main advantages: elimination of high-wattage resistors normally required for the load and controllability of the load current.

Fig. 1: Electronic load circuit controllable from a single supply
As shown in Fig. 1, transistors T1 and T2 form a Darlington pair which is powered by variable 12V using a three-terminal regulator LM317. Resistor R2 provides base current to the Darlington pair drive circuit, which is controlled by 5-kilo-ohm, 10-turn potentiometer VR1 connected to the ADJ terminal of LM317. The output of the driver circuit is taken across resistor R4 and fed to power transistors T3 and T4 through current-limiting resistor R3.

The power supply under test is connected across collector and emitter leads of the power transistors as shown in Fig. 1. Load current is sensed by small wire-wound resistor R7 (0.2-ohm, 10W) connected in series with the load and the voltage drop across it is measured by a digital voltmeter. Thus a load current of 1 amp would give a drop of 100 mV, and so on. Thus a voltmeter reading of 1 mV means that current flowing in the power supply under test is 10 mA.

Fig. 2: Pin configurations of LM317, SL100 and power transistor 2N3773
Assemble the control circuit on a general-purpose PCB and enclose in a box. Fix the potmeter on front side of the box to control load of the DC power supply to be tested. Fix the power transistor along with a large heat-sink with proper cooling arrangement. Draw two leads across resistor R7 for measuring the voltage through digital voltmeter.

EFY note. The heat-sink has to be air-cooled and the power dissipation of each 2N3773 power transistor should not be allowed to exceed 120 watts, although its rated value is 150 watts.

[www.keralites.net] Indian scientists use neem protein to fight cancer

Immune cells are normally hostile to cells that are dangerous to the body including cancer cells. However, in a unique role-reversal during tumour development, these crucial defence elements are enslaved by the cancerous cells to promote their growth and proliferation. Therefore, instead of destroying the lethal cells, the guard cells actually favour their growth.

What makes NLGP special is that the extract modifies the milieu of cells surrounding the tumour (called tumour microenvironment or TME) and spurs these cells towards a normal state that is debilitating for toxic cells like cancer cells.

"In our recent study we have seen that NLGP has the potency to normalise tumour micro-environment consisting of tumour cells and tumour associated non-transformed cells that help in tumour progression. Basically, NLGP modulates the tumour microenvironment in such a way that it restricts further growth of the tumour," Rathindranath Baral, head of the department of immunoregulation and immunodiagnostics, CNCI, told IANS.

Besides the immune cells (that infiltrate the tumour site from the bloodstream) the TME consists of a variety of other cells (fibroblast and endothelial cells) in addition to a range of growth factors that activate and promote growth of tumour cells.

Among the immune cells is a group of cancer-killing cells called CD8+T cells.

As the microenvironment returns to the tumour-directed hostile state, triggered by NLGP, the population of T cells shoots up, thereby aiding in restriction of the cancer. NLGP also shields the T cells from developing a non-reactive state (called anergy).
The study published in peer-reviewed PLOS ONE states that these killer T cells (produced in NLGP treated tumour-bearing mice) exhibited a greater number of molecules with the power to destroy the cancer cells, compared to the T-cells from mice that were not treated with NLGP.

"Examination of non-toxic NLGP on human cancer patients is awaited. But if we get clearance to treat cancer patients with NLGP, intramuscular injection might be an effective route," Baral said.

"Initial results are very encouraging. It has been found that it can arrest the progress of the tumour cell growth, particularly without any major or serious adverse event.

"However, we have to take up this molecule with different regulatory bodies, particularly with the Drug Controller General of India, for their approval...Once it is approved, we can take up this in human trial," said Jaydip Biswas, director, CNCI.
