[www.keralites.net] Got hired? Consider these suggestions

Youre starting a new job. Youre good at what you do... or at least you were good at what you did at your old job. But now youre unproven.

Now you need to get off to a great start... and you dont have a lot of time to make that happen. If youre a senior executive you probably have three months to stake out your position and take a few major and visible steps.

If youre lower on the corporate ladder you might have even less time.

I havent started a new job in forever, so I found someone better to give advice:Jim Whitehurst. Hes gone from a management consultant at Boston Consulting Group to Treasurer and then Chief Operating Officer of Delta Airlines and is now the CEO ofRed Hat, the $1.1 billion open source software company.

So yeah, hes successfully started a few new jobs.

Heres Jim on how to get off to the perfect start in your new job:

Deeply understand how the business creates value.

Obviously you need to learn how to do your job well, but more than that you need to understand the companys competitive advantage and underlying value proposition to make sure those things happen.

Dont assume your predecessor did.

When I reflect on what I do at Red Hat and what I did at Delta its absolutely night and day. I didnt think about it at the time, but when I think back to Delta I realize I was pretty hard on people. An airline is a pennies and nickels kind of business with single-digit margins -- if youre lucky. So I would challenge and direct and correct I was extremely focused on execution and spent the majority of my time going through the details.

At Red Hat my focus is on talking to customers, to M & A prospects, to partners, to CIOs to find out where they think the future of tech is going. Were outward facing, customer facing, and all about the future, while the airline business is pretty well defined and the goal is to optimize within that box. Strategic long-term planning is a much bigger part of what I do now than it was at Delta.

Dont assume the way you did your old job, or the way your new job was done before, is the way it should be done now.

If you want to succeed and move up to higher levels take the time to figure out how the company truly creates value.

Learn how to serve all of your constituents.

You may have direct reports. You may have external customers. You definitely have internal customers. Often many of your constituents have little to do with what you might think is your job.

In my role, over half of my time is not spent running the business. Talking to the press, to board members, investors, analysts, engaging in civic responsibilities (because you cant be a leader without being a leader in the community where that company lives and works).

At first I got frustrated by those demands. Then I realized I couldnt run a full schedule the way I once did. Ineededto be on the phone talking to legislators about issues. Ineededto be on the phone with the governor-elect when he asked if I would host a session to get input from business leaders. All that "stuff" is really important to our company and our community.

Youll start a job with certain expectations, but once you understand the needs of all your constituents you must redefine how you see your job and the way you perform it.

Learn about all of your constituents and determine how to serve themwhilecreating value for your company. That might sound contradictory, but when you deeply understand how the company creates value and you deeply understand your constituents, it's not.

Stay focused on what you do best.

You were hired for a reason. Dont lose sight of that reason as you take on your new duties.

Sometimes a company hires a new employee because they need specific things done and that person has done those things before. Sometimes a company hires a new employee who has the attributes they need instead of the person with the right set of skills experiences.

Often its a blend of both: Youre hired because of your skills and qualifications but also because you bring qualities and attributes the company needs.

Never lose sight of what makes you different. You possess qualities and attributes other people dont. Thats why you were hired.

Use them. But make sure you also...

Show what you will do differently.

Never assume what made you successful at one job will make you successful at your new job. Many executives fail because they try to apply what was successful in the past to a new business.

Understand the companys competitive advantage, understand the needs of all your constituents, and decide how you can leverage your skills, experiences, and intangibles to stake out a position and take the job to another level.

Work extremely hard to deliver value... and soon the company may decide to takeyouto another level.

[www.keralites.net] : Energy boosters

What are energy boosters?

Energy boosters are actions that create an overall positive energy balance. In other words, after we perform energy boosting activities we have more energy. Some obvious energy boosters are:
  • Eating healthy foods and supplements (especially lean proteins and fresh fruits and vegetables)
  • Drinking sufficient water to stay hydrated (on average 64 fluid ounces per day depending upon body weight)
  • Getting sufficient sleep (for most people 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 hours are required on a regular basis)
  • Moderate exercise (aerobic exercise, strength training, and stretching in varying combinations depending on your goals, 3-7 times per week)
  • Meditation (15-30 minutes a day reduces tension holding patterns, increases circulation and oxygen uptake, and increases positive brain chemistry, among many other benefits)
  • Doing what we love ( when we participate in activities we enjoy, we increase our enthusiasm and energy level)

What are energy drainers?

Energy drainers consume more energy than they provide. We feel more tired when we do these things consistently or over a long period of time. Some common energy drainers are:
  • Eating excess sugars and starchy carbohydrates (excess sugars and carbs put us on an energy rollercoaster)
  • Drinking excessive amounts of caffeinated or alcoholic beverages (these lead to de-hydration)
  • Smoking (reduces oxygen uptake, among other negative effects)
  • Insufficient sleep (our body needs sleep for physical, emotional, and mental recovery)
  • Being sedentary (the body is made to move and requires physical activity for oxygen and nutrient delivery, toxin removal, and to function properly)
  • Overworking (non-stop and excessive activity leads to stress and adrenal exhaustion)
  • Doing activities because we feel forced to, not because we enjoy them.

How boosters become drainers?

When we do anything in excess, it can become a drainer instead of a booster.
If we over exercise, overeat, oversleep, or overdo activity without breaks or rest, these activities can exhaust us rather than energize us. The key then is to become a master of managing our energy.
Energy management begins when we acknowledge that we are in charge of our lives.
We shift from viewing ourselves as victims of the circumstances that surround us to seeing ourselves as active participants in the creation of our lives.
We are largely responsible for our life circumstances and we can create a positive energy balance by the choices we make.
We need to prioritize.
Only allow things on your schedule that are trully of value to you and the care of those around you.
Reduce or eliminate anything that is not a priority or an energy booster.

[www.keralites.net] Khatte-mitten khabhrain from around the world for 23/3/13

My train of thoughts went back to the mid-60s when I heard the analogy for the first time… to the AP Nagarajan-produced super hit mythological Tamil film, Thiruvilayadal…  The king of the land, a shiv bhakt/devout raises a query - and wants the answer from the learned poets in his country - whether the fragrance in a woman's hair is natural and it owes its origins to the flowers she uses.  Lord Shiv communicates His verdict by means of poem to the august palace court presided over the king through a poor poet, a role played by the then hit comedian, Nagesh, that it is natural.   The kingdom's resident poet, Nakkiran, correctly guesses the author of the poem and euphemistically comments, while the archer sits far away, his arrow has landed here.

Toi edit headline: Supreme Court sends a strong anti-terror message.

(Allowing for the Indian media's penchant for making vastly exaggerated and superfluous claims, one would respectfully submit this is the TALLEST and unbeatable claim…)

Violent anti-Sri Lankan mood in TN.

(Comment: The informed and discerning know that these will have a diamtrically opposite effect on Sri Lankan Tamils, far from helping them in any way, for such actions incite and inflame the local Sinhalese populace against the Tamils and in fact are being driven into the open arms of our hostile neighbours.  The best alternative, one would suggest, is that if the TN politicians' tears genuine and they are so concerned about the well-being and welfare of their Sri Lankan brethren, they should welcome them back from Sri Lanka and resettle them in TN)

Health info

Studies show that flowers make people happy and have strong positive effects on emotional well being.

(Me: Absolutely true.  The reason why me post so many images of flowers every day….!)

Everything we eat or drink give us gas.  Just about the only food that doesn't give us gas is rice.  Most starches, other than rice, including potatoes, corn, pasta and wheat produce gas as they are broken down in the large intestine.

Are banana peels edible?

People are unaware that banana peels are edible.  In fact, they're very nutritious.  Many cultures eat the entire banana, "peel and all", but not north Americans.  Banana peels are rich in potassium, soluble and insoluble fibre, as well as lutein, to help protect your eyes.  The mood-enhancing amino acid tryptophan is also present in the banana peel.

Energy drinks may increase blood pressure…

Consumption of energy drinks might impact cardiac health by increasing blood pressure and disturbing heart rhythm, researchers claim.

The mother says, "That's because it's empty, you have to put something into it!"

Later that evening, the mother has a headache and says, "I have such a terrible headache?!"

The little girl looked up at her giving her the sweetest smile that any little child could give and says, "That's because it's empty, you have to put something into it.

10 million Indians want to move to US.

Parents want daughter jailed after she loots home thrice…

London: A mum whose daughter looter their family home in a "spiteful" campaign condemned a judge for not locking her up.  Ruth Lunch, 45, of Whitworth, Lancashire, was devastated after Jennice, 19, burgled the Pounds sterling 300,000 luxury house three times in a month – stealing a gold and diamond bracelet, a treasured Pounds 4,000 watch and cigarettes.  "The thieving has gone on for donkeys years and getting the police involved was our last resort", says the lady.

Scorned wife shames husband on billboard..

A woman from Greensboro, North Carolina, took revenge on her cheating husband by shaming him on a massive billboard.  The ad has attracted the attention of several passers-by, even slowing down traffic as drivers stopped to admire the ad.  One fan told Fox News, "I love that woman.  Good for her!"

Population rise reason behind rapes: Mamata

(Me: Not exactly.  One of the chief reasons is the highly skewed female-to-male ratio in India…)

A husband and wife, both aged 60, were celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary.   During the party, a fairy appeared to congratulate them and grant them each a wish.  The wife wanted to travel around the world.  The fairy waved her wand and poof! The wife had tickets for a world cruise.

Next, the fairy asked the husband what he wanted.  He said, "I wish I had a wife 30 years younger than me."

So the fairy picked up her wand and poof! The husband was 90.
