Pravasi Lok Adalat takes up petitions

The Pravasi Lok Adalat has decided to pursue petitions by employees seeking compensation and benefits from their employers. The petitions were filed by Indians, who mostly worked in West Asian countries, or by their legal heirs seeking benefits from their respective foreign governments, employers or insurers.

The decision was taken at the adalat which was held here on Friday. It was organised jointly by Kerala Legal Services Authority (KELSA), Centre for Indian Migrant Studies (CIMS), and Norka Roots.

The petitions brought before the adalat were examined and discussed in consultation with Indian lawyers practising abroad. KELSA would now send the petitions with its opinions to the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).

NALSA would then get in touch with the foreign affairs department to get the grievances redressed through the respective embassies.

The adalat was inaugurated by former High Court Judge C.N. Ramachandran Nair. Speaking at the function, George Joseph, former Ambassador to Qatar and Bahrain, said NRIs in distress should approach their respective embassies for help. More often than not, the help of private sponsors is sought, which land them in more trouble.

Thampan Thomas, trade union leader, said immigrant workers were facing many problems. He said 50 per cent of these workers were women. He stressed the need for enacting laws based on the norms laid down by the ILO to protect the interests of immigrant workers. A.J. Varghese of Norka Roots spoke.

P. Mohanadas, member secretary, KELSA, welcomed the gathering and Rafeek Ravuther of the Centre for Indian Migrant Studies, proposed a vote of thanks.

Re: [www.keralites.net] അങ്ങനെ ഞാനും ബാഗ്ലൂരിലെ മെട്രോയില്‍ കയറി. KERALA DEVELOPMENTS

Dear All,

I want to share my view in the above subject.

Recently Kerala Govt. is behind High speed railway line.  I think it will be stupid idea in the present situation.

1. The cost itself is very huge ( Rs 1,18,000 crore - http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/industry-and-economy/logistics/article3599100.ece?ref=wl_industry-and-economy
2. How long it will take the Govt. to get back the Cost.
3. From where the Govt. will find money to repay the loan.
4. How many people should travel everyday to make the project either no loss/profit or only profit business.

I have an alternative.

If the Govt. is concentrating on the following projects ( a. Kayamkulam & Ernakulam doubling and - Shornur - Mangalore doublein and electicification, b. Development of National Highways) it would be more viable and helpful to the people.

If we have fully electrified double line between Trivandrum and Mangalore, we can travel in 8-9 hours ( 634 Kms.). More and more EMUs should ply in Kerala.

Your Comments are invited in the above subject.

Regards
Anil

Dear Jinto Cherian

Well written. I entirely agree with you that development does not mean providing subsidised/free food items and other commodities ( to people, who do not deserve it.) Most of the money spent for subsidies for food items is benefitting the ration shop dealers only.  With a daily wage earning of Rs.500, no family in Kerala with at least one person to work is not below the poverty line. The more subsidy the Government gives, more money flows in  to the beverage shops and from there to the liquour manufactures. I wish the Government stops all subsidies and utilise that money for the health sector to provide  quality treatment and medicines free to the people and for other infrastructual developments.

Re: [www.keralites.net] Harthaal

Dear Friends,

There is always a possibility to do big things from a small step.

1. Make a small Anti- Hartal group  in your area.( Ensure that you do not have a politicians in the group.)

2. Ensure that no vehicle is  stopped on the road in your area on a Hartal day.

3. Support shop owners on the road side to open their shops, and position some of your members to give protection to the shop.

We were successful in doing this in our Residential area, with just 10 members in the group; preventing hartal in a stretch of 500 meter road.

Next hartal we hope adjacent Area  will join us too; to increase the scope. Try and do this in your your small area on next Hartal ,it slowly will spread to cover a larger scope.Remember ,the laws in Kerala  will be behind you.

Dear Friends,

Like bhand, hartal also is to be banned for assuring a peaceful life of the common public. Hartal is a terrorist activity, because it is force on the unorganised public by creating a terrifiing atmosphere deploying goondas by the parties declaring the hartal. It would be worth remembering that all of us including political parties were in full agreement with the idea of banning bhand. The ban essentially has to be extented on to the present day hartal, which obviously has all the evils and anti social elements of a bhand.

Onrganisations and political parties have every right to protest; but that should not be an illegal intrusion into the privacy or rights of a citizens assured by the constitution. Unless the word 'hartal' is removed from the modes of protest, the general public will continue to suffer from the evils of hartal. Let us resort to other peaseful means of protest to make our social life a safe and peaseful experience in our country.

With love and regards

Bose
